JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — The Carson-Newman baseball team
split Saturday’s doubleheader with No. 25 Lincoln Memorial,
as the Eagles fell in game one, 11-7, before rebounding with a 15-2
victory in game two at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex.
With the split, C-N is now 4-4 on the season and 1-2 in the South
Atlantic Conference. The Railsplitters are 5-3 overall and 2-1 in
the conference.
The Eagles raised their hit total for the three-game series to 38
after pounding out 11 hits in the first contest and 14 in game two.
C-N also hit five home runs on the day to bring its season total to
16.
In game one, C-N fell behind 7-2 before rallying in the bottom of
the sixth inning to tie the contest at 7.
But Lincoln Memorial’s Ben Adleburg (Madisonville, Fla.)
delivered a grand slam in the seventh to lift the Railsplitters to
the win.
Freshman catcher Lance Reed (Elizabethton, Tenn.) went 3-for-3,
including a double, to lead C-N, while Derek Long (Jefferson City,
Tenn.) and Cody Nix (Cartersville, Ga.) added two hits apiece in
the loss. Senior Corey Lamson (Gray, Tenn.) and junior Evan
Patterson (Knoxville, Tenn.) each homered for the Eagles.
Left fielder Cody Baker collected three hits, including a triple,
while Cody Pack (Andersonville, Tenn.) produced a pair of home runs
and four RBIs for Lincoln Memorial. Adleburg finished with two hits
and five RBIs.
Lincoln Memorial’s Garrett Copeland (Knoxville, Tenn.) (3-0)
earned the win after scattering two hits and striking out one
batter in 3 1/3 innings of work.
C-N reliever Robby Thigpen (St. Petersburg, Fla.) was tagged with
the loss. Thigpen (0-2) surrendered three runs on five hits and
struck out three batters in three innings on the mound.
In the second game, the Eagles pounded out 14 hits and received a
stellar effort from starting hurler Cy Fraker (Indianapolis, Ind.)
en route to a 15-2 win.
Fraker (1-0) worked all seven innings, allowed two runs on five
hits and struck out five batters to pick up the win.
Railsplitters’ starting pitcher Brandon Cowan (Tequesta,
Fla.) was hit with the loss after giving up five runs on four hits
in 3 1/3 innings. He also had three strikeouts and three walks.
Senior shortstop Mills Rogers tallied three hits, including a home
run, to lead C-N at the plate, while Lamson, Zach Long (Jefferson
City, Tenn.) and Mason Guymon (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) finished with two
hits apiece. Jeff Lockwood (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Lucas Mohon
(Glasgow, Ky.) each contributed two-run home runs.
Gelson Perez (Gurabo, P.R.) collected two hits to lead the
Railsplitters.
Lincoln Memorial claimed a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a RBI
single by Pack, but the Eagles took control of the game with a
six-run outburst in the fourth, highlighted by Rogers’
two-run blast.
C-N pushed its lead to 8-2 in the fifth on Lockwood’s
towering two-run home run to center field.
The Eagles put the game out of reach in the sixth by pushing across
seven more runs, including Mohon’s two-run homer.
C-N returns to action on Wednesday in a doubleheader at Lander.
First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
