Ferguson Pitches Eagles Past Maryville College, 8-5

MARYVILLE, Tenn. — Carson-Newman junior reliever D.J. Ferguson (Jupiter, Fla.) turned in a career effort to lead the Eagles to an 8-5 victory over Maryville College on Tuesday night at Scotland Yard.

Ferguson (4-1) worked 5 1/3 innings of relief, giving up one run and three hits and striking out a career-high nine batters to earn the win.

With the victory, the Eagles improve to 19-8 on the season. Maryville falls to 13-6 overall.

C-N remained hot at the plate as it collected 16 hits on the night. The Eagles have averaged 16.3 hits per game in their last six contests.

Senior Derek Long (Jefferson City, Tenn.) and freshman Tyler Davis (Carrolton, Ga.) led the way with three hits apiece, while Mills Rogers (Simpsonville, S.C.), Jon Dalton (Rutledge, Tenn.), Lance Reed (Elizabethton, Tenn.) and Cody Nix (Cartersville, Ga.) added two hits each. Rogers and Nix each delivered two RBIs in the win.

The Scots managed nine hits for the game, including a 3-for-5 effort from Mikee Moore. Myles Cordell and Kyle Cyprysiak each tallied two hits and drove in two runs in the loss.

Maryville reliever Mark Morales (1-2) was tagged with the loss after surrendering four runs and four hits in 2/3 of an inning on the mound.

The Eagles fell behind 2-1 after one inning of play but they responded with a four-run outburst in the top of the second inning to take the lead for good.

Ferguson then took care of the rest as he gave up his lone run in the fifth but got out of the inning by fanning three batters. He allowed just one hit the rest of the way.

The Eagles return to the diamond at home on Wednesday against Limestone. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex.
