Brevard, N.C. - Carson-Newman's Wes McIntyre fired a a
seven-inning no-hitter in game two as the Eagles swept a South
Atlantic Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon from Brevard
College, 12-3 and 6-0, in Brevard, N.C.
Carson-Newman took control of game one with a five run second
inning. Evan Patterson got the scoring started with a two-run
double to left center. Mills Rogers added an RBI single, and Jeff
Lockwood took a Casey Burnette pitch over the wall in right for a
two-run home run. Lockwood has 16 home runs this season, which is
second in the country.
Carson-Newman tacked on three more runs in the fourth inning.
Brevard responded with a three run frame of their own. Kellen Moman
led off the inning with a single to left and was brought home on a
double from Vance Crook. Eric Renegar singled through the right
side to drive in Crook. Brett Brinson, who had a base hit earlier
in the inning, scored on a wild pitch from Eagles starter Cy
Fraker. Renegar had three hits in the game. Moman finished two for
four with a run scored. Crook also had two hits, scored once, and
drove in a run.
C-N plated a single run in the sixth inning and added three more in
the ninth. Derek Long had four hits in six at bats with a run
scored and an RBI. Lockwood was one for three with two RBI and two
runs scored.
Fraker pitched six innings and allowed three runs on nine hits
while striking out seven and walking two to get the win and improve
his record to 3-0. Ryan Hendrickson earned a three inning save, his
fourth of the season, striking out eight Tornados and allowing one
hit.
Burnette worked three and a third innings and suffered his first
loss of the year.
McIntyre was brilliant in game two, going the distance for
Carson-Newman (21-8, 10-3) and allowing only four Tornados (6-19,
1-15) to reach base. He struck out 12, walked one, and only needed
85 pitches to complete his work.
Jackie Corn drew a walk and was hit by a pitch, and Moman reached
first after a dropped third strike and a passed ball, but that was
the only offense the Tornados could muster.
C-N put single runs across in both the first and third innings and
broke the game open with a four-run sixth. Rogers had a key three
RBI single and also hit a solo home run to left field in the second
inning. He had three hits and four runs driven in and scored once
in the game. Corey Lamson had two hits and an RBI.
With the win McIntyre improves his record to 3-1. Tornado starter
Jacob White worked six innings and allowed six runs on 11 hits
while striking out five and walking one. Joseph Lepore came on in
relief of White and worked a scoreless seventh.
Carson-Newman hosts King March 29. Brevard next plays at Milligan
College on March 31 in a double header with first pitch of game one
scheduled for 5 p.m.
