Kirby tabbed SAC and TSWA Player of the Week

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The South Atlantic Conference and Tennessee Sportswriters' Association announced Tuesday morning that Paul Kirby earned Player of the Week honors following a breakout effort during a 4-0 week for Carson-Newman baseball.

The senior went 6-for-15, a .400 batting average, at the plate with three home runs, 12 RBIs while scoring six times in four games. Catawba and Lincoln Memorial each have three players earning the weekly honor while Carson-Newman has picked up the highest amount with a pair.

Kirby wins his first weekly honor of his career while joining teammate Ryan Addington (Cincinnati, Ohio) as winners of each plaudit this season as Addington won each honor on Valentine's Day after a record-breaking week.

The Goodlettsville, Tenn. native started his week against Shorter in a 16-2 win on Tuesday by going 2-for-5 with a grand slam, a career-high seven RBIs and a run scored. The grand slam was the second of his career as he pounded a long ball on March 8, 2016 against Lee.

The first baseman had four hits in 10 at-bats with five runs scored in as the Eagles picked up a sweep against Wingate for the first time since 2005. He became the first player since Austin Kearney on April 16, 2016 to hit homers in each game of a doubleheader hitting a solo shot in game one and providing the lone run support for the club in a 3-1 series finale with a three-run bomb to left field.

On the season, Kirby is 48th nationally and sixth in the league in doubles with 14, fourth in slugging percentage at .664, ninth in total bases with 93 and triples with three while ranking 10th with eight roundtrippers.

Carson-Newman is back in action Wednesday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex when Covenant comes to Mossy Creek at 4 p.m. The Eagle Sports Network will have the broadcast coverage on cneagles.com/live starting 15 minutes before first pitch.
