Guerreiro picks up singles victory, but Eagles fall in open at Alabama-Huntsville

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.  – Patricia Guerreiro (Portugal) picked up a win over Katie Bryant in no. 2 singles, but Alabama-Huntsville (2-0) cruised to an 8-1 win over C-N (0-1) as the Eagles opened their 2013 campaign on the road Friday afternoon.

Carson-Newman hung tough in most of its matches, but one broken serve proved to be the difference in several.  Jennifer Ott (Knoxville, Tenn.) dropped her match at no. 4 singles 6-4, 6-4 to Lina Carvajal.  Brooke Sanderson (Evans, Ga.) nearly toppled Alajandra Pacheco at no. 5 singles losing in heartbreaking fashion in a tiebreaker 1-6, 6-3 1-0 (12-10).

The Eagles were competitive in doubles as well, but also just barely ended up on the short end of the stind ck. Jessica Grouppierre  and Carvajal defeated Stefy Stand (Ecuador) and Guerreiro 8-6 at no. 1 doubles while Maria Lawton and Kasi McDonald overcame Sanderson and Megan Wilson (Maryville, Tenn.) 9-8.

The Eagles return home Sunday to face Young Harris at 1 p.m.
