Lady Eagles Roll to 3-0 Sweep of Newberry

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — The Carson-Newman volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-8) victory over Newberry in South Atlantic Conference action on Friday night at Holt Fieldhouse.

The Lady Eagles, who have won three straight contests, are now 8-3 on the season and 2-3 in the conference. Newberry falls to 10-4 overall and 3-2 in SAC play.

C-N dominated the match and trailed just once during the three sets. Senior Carly Mozgai (Greensboro, N.C.) paced the Lady Eagles with 17 kills and a hitting percentage of .500. She also had nine digs and two block assists.

Junior Nikki James (Cookeville, Tenn.) tallied 10 kills with a hitting percentage of .562 and a match-high eight blocks, while Laura McDonald (Salem, Va.) and Courtney Lawson (Chattanooga, Tenn.) collected 17 and 14 assists, respectively. Sophomore Rachael Bowlin (Morristown, Tenn.) had a match-high 15 digs.

C-N finished the night with 11 team blocks, as junior Carly Swisher (Fort Collins, Colo.) had four block assists and freshman Lindsey Bryant (Gainesville, Ga.) added three block assists.

Samantha Parrish (Angola, Ind.) and Katie Davenport (Tyrone, Ga.) tallied five kills apiece to lead the Wolves, while Brianna Blakely (Houston, Texas) had a double-double with 12 assists and 10 digs in the loss.

The Lady Eagles jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first set and led by as many as nine points late. Newberry was able to pull within 24-19 before Mozgai tallied a kill to give C-N the win.

C-N built a 12-2 lead in the second set but the Wolves fought back to trim the Lady Eagles' lead to 24-22. However, Swisher produced a kill to put C-N ahead two sets to none.

After Newberry opened the final frame with a kill by Anne Staudinger (Fort Wayne, Ind.), the rest of the game belonged to the Lady Eagles. C-N had a team hitting percentage of .600 for the set as it outscored the Wolves 25-7 the rest of the way to claim the victory.

The Lady Eagles will be back in action on Saturday against conference newcomer Anderson. Match time is set for 2 p.m. at Holt Fieldhouse.
