Carson-Newmans picks up sweep at Brevard, 3-0

Brevard, N.C. - Seven Tornados recorded kills in Friday evening's match against Carson-Newman College, but the Eagles used a pair of 17 kill performances by Nikki James and Carly Mozgai as Brevard fell in SAC action, 27-25, 25-17, 25-20.

Ashley Morrison led Brevard (3-24, 0-17 SAC) with seven kills in the match, while Erin Rollins had six and Bethany Stevenson had five, leading the team by hitting 45.5 percent in the match. Stevenson finished the match with a double-double, recording a team-high 22 set assists, while leading the team with 14 digs. Jordei Osby led the team at the net with three total blocks in the match, while Rebecca Schoonover finished the match with 13 digs.

James and Mozgai led Carson-Newman (17-9, 9-8 SAC) with 17 kills apiece as the Eagles hit 20.8 percent for the match as a team. Lara McDonald led the team with a game high 41 set assists, while Angelle Hayes led the team with a game-high 17 digs. James also led the team at the net with five total blocks in the match.

Carson-Newman opened up the first set up 11-5, following a kill by Mozgai, but the Tornados rallied back, recording 10 of the next 14 points, including five in a row to tie up the match at 15 following a pair of Rollins' service aces. The teams split the next 20 points, as Osby and Stevenson recorded a block to send the match to 25-25. The Eagles closed out the set as Mozgai recorded a kill and Swisher recorded a solo block to put Carson-Newman up 1-0.

A trio of attack errors tied the second set up at 14 apiece, but the Eagles recovered to record 11 of the next 14 points as James closed out the set, 25-17 to put Carson-Newman up 2-0.

In the third and final set, the Eagles held a 17-12 lead late in the set, but the Tornados brought it back to within one at 20-19, reeling off seven of the next nine points on Stevenson's serve, but the Tornados were unable to tie up the set, falling 25-20.

Brevard continues the SAC schedule at home, as they close out conference play tomorrow afternoon in Boshamer Gymnasium against Lincoln Memorial. First serve between the Tornados and the Railsplitters is set for noon.
