Final home game of the year for baseball brings Hawks to town

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Eagles (23-18) welcome the Shorter Hawks (14-18) for the final home game of the 2015 season Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex.

The nonconference contest marks the final opportunity for the Eagles to get prepared for an upcoming crucial South Atlantic Conference series against the Wingate Bulldogs as Carson-Newman will play for its conference tournament lives sitting as the eight-seed.

Carson-Newman saw an eight-game winning streak come to a close over the weekend where it was swept by the Newberry Wolves in the Palmetto State. The Eagles mustered six runs in the series after averaging over seven runs in the previous 16 games.

Conversely, the Carson-Newman pitching staff gave up three multi-run innings against Newberry in 26 innings of otherwise solid pitching.

The Eagles have won all three games in the series against the Hawks including a 6-5 victory in Rome, Ga. on February 28. Seniors Bo Ausmus (Jefferson City, Tenn.) and Evan Jurjevic (New Carlisle, Ind.) had two hits in the contest while freshman Cade Snapp (Seymour, Tenn.) drove in three runs on the day.

Carson-Newman scored the first six runs of the game before the Hawks put up two in the sixth and eighth innings and one in the seventh stanza. Starting pitcher Logan Shaftner (Lexington, Ky.) worked six innings allowing two runs on four hits with two strikeouts.

Shorter has lost seven of its last eight ball games having been shutout in three consecutive contests while being 6-7 in road games this year.

Zach Santos paces the offense with a .366 batting average, seven home runs and 33 runs batted in. As a team, the Hawks are hitting .294 on the season with six players batting above .300 on the season. The running game is controlled by Brian Cabrera who has 11 stolen bases in as many attempts.

The pitching staff is yielding a .258 batting average against while walking 154 batters in 266.2 innings pitched on the year. The team earned run average is 5.10 as only one pitcher on the roster has an ERA of below 4.20 on the season.
