Eagles set to wrap-up 2015 season in Music City

Carson-Newman Baseball Game Notes

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Eagles (24-21) travel to Nashville, Tenn. for a 5 p.m. first pitch from Jackson Field against the Trevecca Nazerene Trojans (30-15) Tuesday evening to put the finishing touches on the 2015 campaign.

Carson-Newman has solidified a winning record for the season marking the first time since 2012 when the Eagles finished 28-26. A win would seal the most games above .500 for the Eagles in a single season since finishing 31-18 in 2010.

Trevecca Nazerene is ranked seventh in the most recent Midwest Regional Poll with a 19-1 record in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, two games ahead of Alderson Broaddus, who is 17-3.

The two programs have a pair of common opponents with both schools losing to Lee. Carson-Newman lost in walk-off fashion on March 12 7-6 after holding a late lead while on April 14 at home Trevecca lost 4-2 to Lee University. The Trojans are also coming off of a four-game sweep of Cedarville scoring 31 runs in the final two games while the Eagles defeated the Yellow Jackets twice at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex in mid-March outscoring Cedarville 30-6 in the two games.

The Trojans are eighth as a team in triples (19), 11th in stolen bases (91), 14th in on-base percentage (.424), 19th in scoring (8.3 runs per game), 20th in batting average (.333), 20th in doubles (100) and 28th in walks (175).

Hunter Newman is having one of the best years in all of Divsion II. The junior leads the country in on-base percentage (.598), a number that would rank third across all divisions as Jason McCormick of Immaclutlata (.620) and Austin Filiere of MIT (.607) have a higher percentage at the Division III level.

Newman's .493 batting average is 3rd best in the country, 6th in home runs (17), 6th in RBI (66) and 24th with 31 walks.

Junior Tyler Tichenor ranks 39th nationally with 22 stolen bases as one of four players to swipe at least 10 bases on the year.

The two sides met for the first time on the diamond in 2014 with each team winning on its home field.

In a 3-1 victory for the Trojans at Jackson Field on March 5, Carson-Newman stranded the bases loaded twice and left 10 on base during the game. Joe Tipton (Dandridge, Tenn.) led the way offensively by going 3-for-5 with an RBI. The Eagles outhit the Trojans 9-8.

The Eagles took a 6-4 decision at the Silver Diamond Baseball complex on April 8. Brandon Timmerman worked 5.1 relief innings scattering two hits in his longest outing in over two years. Bo Ausmus (Jefferson City, Tenn.) went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a pair of runs scored while Evan Jurjevic (New Carlisle, Ind.) with 3-for-4 with a double, three RBI and a run scored.
