JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman head men's basketball coach Chuck Benson has announced the hiring of 1,000-point scorer Luke Brenegan to be the program's next graduate assistant coach.

"I'm very excited that Luke stays on staff with us," Benson said. "Obviously, I have great comfortability with him from the role he played with us as a player.  But, he was more than a player. He was a leader and coach on the floor. I know the transition is going to be easier than maybe anyone we've had.  He has a good basketball mind and will bring a different perspective than we've had because he has been playing at such a high level so recently."

The 40th player in the history of the Carson-Newman men's basketball program to score 1,000 career points, Brenengan wrapped up his Carson-Newman career with 1,115 career points and 221 career made threes.  The Greenville, S.C.-native has the sixth-most assists in school history with 363.

"I'm looking forward to this," Brenegan said. "I know the ins and outs of this team, what our coaches want and what works in this league. I think I will be able to add value to what we do."

He is one of four players in school history at the conclusion of his playing career to knock down more than 200 career triples.  He wrapped up his senior season averaging 10.3 points per game. He canned 51 threes, a fourth straight season with at least 50 triples made.  He was one of two players on the roster to start and appear in all 28 games.

Brenegan scored in double digits in 17 games with his fifth career 20-point game coming at Wingate (Feb. 22) when he went for 23 points on 7-of-10 shooting from deep.

He led C-N with 100 assists on the year, 3.6 per game, and a 2.1 assist to turnover ratio. Included in that are a pair of eight assist games against Mars Hill (Dec. 14) and Johnson (Nov. 28).

With 103 career starts, Brenegan joins Mike Ogan (139) and Charles Clark (111) as the only players in program history with more than 100 career starts.

Among his career accolades are a pair of SAC player of the week awards, one from his junior year and one from his sophomore year.  He also earned All-SAC honors in his red-shirt sophomore season, a Tennessee Sportswriters' Association State Player of the Week award and SAC All-Tournament team honors.
