Compagner, Charamba take home top honors at 10th Annual Frosty Awards

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Carson-Newman men's track and field's Maka Charamba and women's swimming's Manon Compagner brought home top honors as the Frosty Award winners for Male and Female Athlete of the Year, respectively, Tuesday evening at the 10th Annual Frosty Awards ceremony inside Carson-Newman's Gentry Auditorium

Additionally, the women's swim program captured team of the year.

Male Athlete of the Year, Maka Charamba - Track and Field

Let's just rattle off Maka Charamba's accomplishments this year. The National Champion in the 200-meter dash, SAC Men's Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year and a two-time All-American at Indoor Nationals.  During indoor season, he topped the podium five times. In outdoor season, he defeated Georgia's Matthew Boling in the 100 meters at the Georgia Tech Invitational. Boling was the national champion in the 100 for Division I.  He has been named SAC Track Athlete of the Week four times this season.

Female Athlete of the Year, Manon Compagner - Swimming

Manon Compagner. Two-time national chamion. Five-time All-American.  SAC Swimmer of the Year.   Compagner won gold in both the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard freestyle at the NCAA DII Swimming and Diving Championships. She is not only the first national champion in the history of the swim program, but also the first woman to win an individual national championship in the history of the Carson-Newman athletic department. Compagner ended her senior season with 11 first-place individual finishes

The women's swim program had its best ever finishes at both the South Atlantic Conference Championships and the national championships, finishing second and seventh, respectively.  The accolades piled up all year long for the program.  Manon Compagner was named SAC Swimmer of the Year, Anna Tudor grabbed the SAC's Elite 23 award and Rachel Peden garnered both Academic All-America honors and the SAC's Women's Swimming Scholar Athlete of the Year award.

Comeback of the Year - Softball v. Tusculum

Carson-Newman pulled off the biggest comeback in school history against Tusculum. Trailing 9-2 after 4.5 innings, the Eagles scored seven times over the next two frames to force extras.  Macey Hughes walloped a grand slam in the sixth to knock the game at nine.  C-N fell behind again, 12-9 after the eighth inning, but walked it off in the bottom of the eighth after loading the bases and getting back-to-back sacrifice flies from Brooke Matyasovksy and Hayden Dye.  The 13-12 final is one of the 10 highest scoring games in school history.

Female Performance of the Year, Manon Compagner - Swimming

At the NCAA DII Swimming and Diving Championships, Manon Compagner won two national championships in three days and picked up five All-America honors over the four day event.  The five All-America swims are the most of any Eagle in school history.  Compagner turned in a gold medal performance in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 52.45 seconds. She followed that two days later in the 100 free with a time of 48.97 seconds.  She tallied a fifth place finish in the 50 free. Her other two All-America swims came as members of relays. She grabbed a bronze medal in the 400 medley relay and a fifth-place finish with the 400 free relay.

Upset of the Year - Football v. #9 Newberry

Football v. No. 9 Newberry: Carson-Newman turned in a defensive performance for the ages, limiting the Wolves to 17 yards of offense after halftime en route to collecting a win over a top-10 team and the 650th victory in program history. The Eagles scored the final 24 points in the contest to take a 24-14 decision from the Wolves.  The Eagles chalked up their first win over a top-10 team since 2009 and their 14th since becoming a NCAA Division II school.

A first-team All-SAC selection Hunneke  finished in the top 20 in 7 of the teams 8 events. His low round of the season came in the opening round of the Tennessee River Rumble, a 6-under 66. 18 of his 24 rounds this season have been for par or better.

Male Performance of the Year, Braxton Westfield - Football

Westfield became the only player in Carson-Newman football history with three consecutive 100-yard receiving days when he snared five passes for 162 yards in the Eagles' 61-23 win at Catawba in the regular season finale.  The senior tied the single-game C-N record with three receiving touchdowns in the contest. All three of his touchdown grabs came the  third quarter. They covered 33, 61 and 37 yards.

Female Newcomer of the Year, Sade De Sousa - Track & Field

Sade De Sousa finished fifth in the women's 60-meter dash at the NCAA Indoor Nationals to earn All-American status. De Sousa's time of 7.37 seconds in the 60 meters reset the C-N program record.  She is the first-ever female first-team All-American in Carson-Newman track and field history. De Sousa is a three-time SAC Track Athlete of the Week honoree.

Coach of the Year, Ben Young - Women's Swimming

With his interim tag removed on February 27, Young helped the women's swim program to its highest ever finish at a league championship meet and its highest finish at nationals.  The Eagles finished second at the SAC championship meet and seventh at the national championship meet.  The Eagles had 10 All-America swims at the event, headlined by Manon Compagner's two national championships.

Male Freshman of the Year, Tyree Nelson - Football

Carson-Newman's fourth-leading rusher in 2022, Nelson was nicked up in the middle of the year, but still recovered to rush for 41.1 yards per game and 411 yards on 76 carries.  He earned second-team all-league laurels.  He had a team-best 5.4 yards per rush. Nelson led Carson-Newman in all-purpose yardage for the year and found the end zone three times.

Female Freshman of the Year, Macauley Bailey - Softball

Macauley Bailey has led the country in runs batted in for much of the 2023 season.  She produced 58 runs in the regular season to go along with 12 home runs and 10 doubles. Her 12 dingers are the most in program history by a freshman. Bailey grooved into an 18-game hitting streak to start the month of March, tied for the fourth-longest in school history.

Tallying its largest win over a nationally-ranked team in school history, Carson-Newman pounded North Georgia 92-61. The Lady Eagles had won by a total of 25 points over its last five victories against top 25 teams.  Five players scored in double figures as the team shot 54 percent from the field for the game and piled up 56 points after halftime.
