Eagles unveil four-game spring slate

VIDEO: Mike Clowney Interview

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman football will tussle with four teams during the spring of 2021 in a truncated slate of games due to the ongoing pandemic.

The Eagles will open the season on March 13 with a trip to UVA Wise.  Carson-Newman won the first meeting between the two teams last season in Burke-Tarr Stadium 42-7.

"We really haven't talked much about who were playing, when and at what time," Clowney said. "The biggest thing we've been focusing on is what we need to do to get through the moment and becoming the team we need to be."

Carson-Newman then returns to Burke-Tarr Stadium for two straight games against Mars Hill and Limestone.

Kickoff with the Lions is set for 7 p.m. on March 20.  The Eagles will be looking for a ninth straight win over the Lions.  The Eagles lead the all-time ledger 47-10.

The Limestone game on March 27 has been designated as the Eagles' homecoming contest.  The Eagles have won two straight homecoming contests and are unbeaten against the Saints all-time (5-0).

Following a bye week on April 3, the Eagles wrap up the regular season on April 10 at Tusculum. Carson-Newman will be searching for its first win in Greeneville since 2014.

"There are so many things with CoVID we can't control," Clowney said. "We always talk about it as a program, control the things you can control and don't worry about the things you can't. It's forced us to be in that situation in real life, which makes it a bit more understandable as a football team."

Carson-Newman will play games in the Mountain Division in the SAC for the spring of 21.  On the other side of the SAC the Piedmont Division features Wingate, Catawba, Lenoir-Rhyne, Newberry and SAC scheduling alliance member Barton.

"It's set up well," Clowney said. "We don't have to travel much.  It's close and we can go down and back in a day.  Hopefully that will allow us to take more kids and get more guys involved."

The winners of the two divisions will play one another in a first-ever SAC title game on April 17.

Announcements on any potential attendance restrictions will be made closer to the start of the season and be featured prominently on cneagles.com.

All of Carson-Newman's contests will be broadcast on the Eagle Sports Network on Joy 620 (WRJZ-AM, Knoxville), The Mountain 106.3 (WPFT-FM, Sevierville) and online at cneagles.com/live.  Coverage begins one hour prior to kickoff with the AEC Tailgate Show.
