FLORENCE, S.C – Tom Read (London, England) scored a goal and added four assists and freshman goalkeeper Joe Boyd (Nottingham, England) recorded his first career shutout for Carson-Newman as the Eagles routed the Flagler Saints 7-0 on Saturday afternoon at Hartzler Field on the campus of Francis Marion University.
Read's four assists are the most by a C-N player since German Arguelles recorded the same number in a match against Newberry in 1995. This is also the second consecutive year a Carson-Newman player has had a game in which he scored six points, as Nick Skoda tallied that many against Belmont Abbey one year ago this past Friday.
It didn't take long for the Eagles to grab the lead, as a corner kick in the sixth minute was sent towards the net by Read and found the head of Steven Parry (Boulogne-Billancourt, France) for the afternoon's first goal and Parry's first of the season. This was also the first goal C-N has scored off a corner this year.
Nine minutes later, the Eagles were awarded another corner kick and Read helped make sure this chance paid off as well. This time, his cross was taken by Thibault Mathorez (Graces, France), who booted it home for his first goal in 2016, making the score 2-0. Read and Parry then teamed up again in the 26th minute, Read earning his third assist of the half and Parry, his second goal, and the Eagles headed into halftime up 3-0.
In the second half, Carson-Newman didn't take their foot off the gas pedal, as in the 73rd minute, Dion Stergiotis (Oakville Ontario) found Read on the left side of the box and Read's finish made the score 4-0. Just over two minutes later, Read picked up his final point of the day when his pass set up Marius Staalby (Trondheim, Norway) for goal No. 5.
While the offense continued its deluge, in goal, Joe Boyd was keeping Flagler off the board. Boyd ended the day with three saves and a clean sheet, his first in collegiate competition.
The Eagles' final two notches on the scoreboard were the first collegiate goals for two of their freshman. The first one was by Collin Hensel (Spring Hill, Tenn.), who had a shot saved by Mel Broughton, but was on the spot for the rebound and put it away. Tobias Solem Karlsen (Kongsvinger, Norway) closed out the scoring in the 87th minute when a perfect pass from Staalby led him into the box and Karlsen beat the keeper for his first C-N goal.
The Eagles have a quick turnaround following this win, as they move on to face USC-Aiken on Monday at 3:30pm in the final game before conference play begins.
