ANDERSON, S.C. – Anderson scored (7-6-1, 6-4 SAC) its two goals in a four-minute span to shutout Carson-Newman (4-8-3, 3-5-1 SAC) on Saturday afternoon at Spero Financial Field.
"Back in many ways to how we were a few weeks ago," Carson-Newman men's soccer head coach Stephen Lyons said. "The difference was in both boxes. The only real positive was reaction after halftime when I questioned their ability to react. They did and created plenty of shots but not enough with the quality."
Anderson breaks up a stretch where the home team in this series had lost the past six meetings.
The game's first shot was a goal. Juan Pablo Lepervanche's pass found the foot of Lukas Bos in the 13th minute, and he slotted a shot into the back of the net to give Anderson the 1-0 lead.
Two minutes later, Carson-Newman posed its first offensive threat. Tim Haans (Tilburg, Netherlands) had his shot toward the center of goal saved.
Diego Jaramillo added to AU's lead, as he scored his first goal of the contest in the 17th minute to make it 2-0 Trojans. The two goals were separated by less than five minutes.
Mitchell Honcoop took Carson-Newman's next two shots that came in the 20th and 24th minutes but both missed the target.
There were only three more shots in the final 21 minutes of the half, all of which came from AU and missed the target.
Thomas Lachapelle took Carson-Newman's first two shots after halftime. His first chance missed wide left and his second forced Anderson to make a team save defensively to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard.
Federico Simonetti (Crema, Italy) made his first save of the game in the 56th minute. He saved Jaramillo's shot that was headed for the center of goal.
After Jaramillo's shot, C-N would begin to pile up the shot attempts. Haans, Lachapelle and Torrennt all took shots in a four-minute stretch and missed the target.
Honcoop had a great chance to bring C-N within a goal in the 69th minute, but the senior's right-footed shot toward the bottom right corner of goal was saved by AU goalkeeper Franco Antoniolli Funes.
Ben Dukes (Southampton, England) also had a great chance to get C-N a goal. In the 82nd minute, his left-footed shot toward the center of goal saved by Antoniolli Funes.
Carson-Newman's final shot of the game in the 87th minute from Daniel Vennesland (Tanager, Norway).
The Eagles outshot the Trojans 14-9, but only four of C-N's 14 shots went on goal. While three of AU's nine were on target.
C-N had two more corner kicks than AU, holding a 5-3 advantage.
Antoniolli Funes records his second consecutive shutout, making three saves. It's just the fourth time this season that Carson-Newman has been shutout in a game this season.
Carson-Newman concludes the regular season with a road matchup against Tusculum on Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m.
