JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — The Carson-Newman women's basketball team overcame a sloppy first half to pull away for a 73-62 victory over Brevard College on Wednesday night in South Atlantic Conference action at Holt Fieldhouse.
The Lady Eagles committed 16 first-half turnovers as they trailed 35-33 at the break. However, C-N dominated the second half on both ends of the floor, holding the Tornados to 30 percent shooting and outscoring them 40-27 on its way to the win.
With the victory, C-N improves to 9-12 on the season and 5-6 in the conference. Brevard drops to 6-15 overall and 2-9 in SAC play.
The Lady Eagles shot 51.9 percent (23-of-62) from the floor while holding Brevard to 37.1 percent shooting (23-of-62) on the night. C-N also dominated the boards, outrebounding the Tornados 48-27.
Sophomore guard Candis Clear (Memphis, Tenn.) tossed in 14 points to lead five Lady Eagles in double figures. Junior Zoriah Williams (Calera, Ala.) chipped in 13 points and pulled down a career-high 19 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season. Freshman Shannon Depew (Newport, Tenn.) added 12 points and six rebounds, while Mandy Mendenhall (Kingston Springs, Tenn.) and Katlin Moore (Fort Mill, S.C.) pitched in 11 points apiece.
Anna Schlobohm paced Brevard with a game-high 27 points. Micheala Watkins finished with 13 points, and Lindsay Brendle chipped in 10 points in the loss.
The Lady Eagles opened the contest on fire, hitting their first five shot attempts to build an early 12-2 lead. Brevard answered with a 17-2 run capped off by a Holli Flippo 3-pointer to take a 19-14 lead at the 11:21 mark.
Brevard pushed its lead to 27-18 before C-N battled back with a 9-0 run to tie the game at 27-27 on a free throw by Depew with 5:31 remaining.
The teams then went back and forth until Schlobohm made a driving layup at the buzzer to give the Tornados a 35-33 advantage heading into the locker room.
C-N took control of the contest early in the second half as it opened with a 19-6 run capped off by a Williams layup with 11:19 remaining to give the Lady Eagles a 52-41 cushion.
Brevard was unable to pull closer than five points the rest of the way.
The Lady Eagles return to action on Saturday at Wingate. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. in Wingate, N.C.
