WINGATE, N.C. — Senior guard Katlin Moore (Fort Mill, S.C.) fired in a career-high 23 points to lead the Carson-Newman women's basketball team to an 87-83 victory over Wingate on Saturday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference action at Cuddy Arena.
Moore, who was 6-of-14 from the floor and 10-of-12 at the charity stripe, also had six rebounds, four assists and three steals in helping the Lady Eagles improve to 10-12 overall and 6-6 in the conference with their fourth straight victory. Wingate drops to 13-7 on the season and 8-4 in SAC play.
C-N shot 43 percent (30-of-69) from the floor, while Wingate shot 41 percent (28-of-68) on the day. The Lady Eagles held a 47-41 edge on the boards, including 16 offensive rebounds.
Senior guard Mandy Mendenhall (Kingston Springs, Tenn.) added 17 points and six assists for C-N, while junior Zoriah Williams (Calera, Ala.) netted 11 points and pulled down 16 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the season.
Tiffany Brown paced Wingate with 17 points, while Kurie Washington (15), Simone Rutledge (14) and CC Brooks (12) also finished in double figures for the Bulldogs.
The Lady Eagles built a17-9 lead by the 12:29 mark of the first half, but Wingate went on a 13-7 run capped off by a 3-point play by Shey Brown to trim C-N's lead to 24-22 with 5:14 remaining.
Moore sank a pair of free throws with 59 seconds remaining to give C-N a 39-33 advantage heading into the locker room.
The Bulldogs opened the second half on fire, hitting five of their first seven shot attempts to go on an 11-0 run. Rutledge finished off the run with a jumper at the 17:12 mark to give Wingate a 44-39 lead.
C-N bounced back to regain the lead with a 10-2 run, as Mendenhall drilled a 3-pointer to give the Lady Eagles a 49-46 advantage.
The teams played to a 55-55 tie before Wingate built its largest lead of the game with a 13-5 run. A 3-pointer by Sarah Wollett capped the run to give the Bulldogs a 68-60 lead with 8:01 remaining.
However, C-N heated up down the stretch and went on a 24-6 run to take control of the game. Moore drained a 3-pointer with 2:10 remaining to give the Lady Eagles an 84-74 lead. Wingate was unable to pull closer than four points the rest of the way.
C-N returns to action on Wednesday at rival Tusculum College. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. in Greeneville, Tenn.
