Tunnell, Eagles take second at McAmis Memorial

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – Carson-Newman's women's golfers heated up their clubs and concluded their final tournament of the regular season – the Agnes McAmis Memorial – in second place to capture momentum headed to the SAC tournament.

Mary Tunnell (Cordova, Tenn.) earned all-tournament honors with her second place finish.  She was one of three, top-10 finishers for the Eagles.

Tunnell finished two strokes behind tournament champion Caitlyn Starrs of Wingate.  Tunnell shot a 73 (+1), Starrs fired a 71 (-1).  Tunnell's 73 is tied for third-lowest round by an Eagle this year.

"We are peaking just at right time," Carson-Newman head women's golf coach Suzanne Strudwick said. "We still have some putting and chipping work to do this week to get prepared for conference. And of course, very pleased with Mary, without question, her best performance of the year."

The Eagles were a stroke back of tournament champion Lee for the team title. The Eagles finished the single-round, rain-shortened event at 304.  The Flames shot a team 306.

Lauren Hodge (Jefferson City, Tenn.) collected her first career top-five finish with a 76 (+4).  She lost a scorecard playoff to Madison Alexander of Lee for the final spot on the all-tournament team. Danielle Baiunco (Melbourne, Fla.) collected her first top-10 finish this year with a 77 (+5) to wind up in a tie for ninth.

No one outside of Meridith Hawksin (Powell, Tenn.) had finished in the top 10 of an event this season for C-N.  Hawkins netted her third top-20 finish with a 78 (+6).  She was tied for 14th

Kelli Pemberton (Knoxville, Tenn.) represented Carson-Newman's non-scoring player.  But she still shot an 80 (+8) and finished a stroke outside the top 20.

Jessica Hart (Roanoke, Va.) and Chelsea Passmore (Knoxville, Tenn.) each competed as individuals and shot an 83 and an 85, respectively.  Hart wound up in a tie for 40th,  Passmore a tie for 50th.

The Eagles tackle the Highlands Course at Eagles' Landing and the Sevierville Golf Club beginning Sunday at the 2014 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament.
