MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C – Under par final rounds from Ellie Haughton and Ida Peterson help Carson-Newman secure a third-place finish at the Low Tide Intercollegiate.
Carson-Newman put together a 300-team score in the final round to move up one spot, and finish in third place. The Eagles finished just six shots back of No. 13 Limestone, who finished second. The top three finish is C-N's second straight to begin the spring part of its schedule.
"I'm proud of our improvement to move into 3rd," Carson-Newman interim head coach Cathy Duggan said. "Ida was very good for us this week and Ellie played very well in the final two rounds. I hope we can continue to build as a team from these strong early season finishes."
Continuing her early season success, Ida Peterson (Copenhagen, Denmark) carded her best round early in her freshman season, with a 1-under 71 in the final round of the Low Tide Intercollegiate. The freshman made two birdies in her opening nine, to shoot a one under par. One bogey and one birdie helped her maintain the incredible round. She finished the event tied for 7th.
Maeve Cummins (Waringstown, Northern Ireland) recorded her second consecutive 5-over 77 to finish in a tie for 15th. The graduate student recorded one birdie in the final round on the par 5 15th. She also made twelve pars in the final round. The top 15 finish is Cummins' third this season.
Ellie Haughton's (Lincolnshire, England) continued her stellar play from yesterday, into the final round, carding a 1-under 71. The senior shot a 2-under 34 on the front nine and followed that up with a 1-over 37 on the back nine. She totaled four birdies in the final round, giving her seven for the tournament. Haughton moved up 31 spots in the final round to finish in a tie for 33rd.
Hannah Holland (Sale Creek, Tenn.) finished her second tournament of the spring season by carding an 11-over 83. She birdied her first hole of the day, number 2, a 345-yard par four. Holland made ten pars but was plagued by a quadruple bogey and triple bogey in the round. She finished tied for 52nd.
Caroline Nemes (Orlando, Fla.) played a strong back nine to help finish with a 9-over 81. The sophomore made ten pars in her final round, finishing tied for 54th.
No. 5 Anderson ran away with the tournament, winning by 29 strokes. Anderson had all five of its golfers finish in the top five individually with Kennedy Gooding winning the individual title.
Carson-Newman finished fourth in scoring average on the par fours and fives in the event.
The Eagles return to the course on March 12-14 for the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate played at Sevierville Golf Club, in Sevierville, Tennessee.
