England leads way as Eagles sit in 12th at Kiawah Island Intercollegiate

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Sophomore Elizabeth England (Oakland, Tenn.) shot the Carson-Newman women's golf team's low round of the first round of the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate hosted by Tusculum with an eight-over 80 as the Eagles are in 12th at Cougar Point Country Club.

"It was a cold start to the spring season both on the course for the team and the weather," coach Suzanne Strudwick said. "A lot of loose shots and putts that I expect we will tighten up over the next couple of weeks. I'm hoping for decent weather tomorrow so we can work on issues identified today. I'm excited about the work ethic and commitment to getting better the team has shown. I know we will have a strong spring because of our attitude to succeed."

England shot an 80, which was just her fourth round in the 80s this season; she is tied for 25th.

Senior Meridith Hawkins (Knoxville, Tenn.) shot an 82 during Saturday's first round to tie for 37th while freshman Taylor Hayes's first round at Cougar Point ended with a round of 11-over 83; Hayes ended the day tied for 44th.

Junior Jessica Hart (Roanoke, Va.) shot an 86, which was her sixth-lowest round this season, and is tied for 56th. Senior Kelli Pemberton shot an 89 for the Eagles during the first round to tie for 69th-place.

Florida Southern leads the tournament by six strokes over Armstrong. Lincoln Memorial is the highest-ranking South Atlantic Conference team with the Railsplitters in fourth and 13 strokes off the lead.

Lenoir-Rhyne's Abbey Hartsell and Armstrong's Pamela Mosley are tied for the lead.

The final round of the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate hosted by Tusculum tees off at 8 a.m. on Sunday morning in the Palmetto State.
