BRISTOL, Tenn. – Finishing the final round with a 616 overall score, Carson-Newman women's golf defended its title winning the team's second straight King Invitational. Senior Elizabeth England also secured back-to-back individual titles in the event hosted by King University.
The victory marks the fifth time C-N has won an event with an individual claiming the top spot.
"Obviously, I'm really pleased with how we performed here," head coach Suzanne Strudwick said of her team's season-opening win. "Starting off the season this strong really puts us in a great position moving forward.
"We talked yesterday about making improvements on the greens and coming off the tee boxes, and those changes were seen today. Winning by 21 was huge so confidence is definitely high right now."
England ended Monday leading the event with a 72 (+1) and held her pace heading into the final round to finish with a three-over 74, three strokes better than anyone else in the field. She now has six victories in her career. She tied in par 4 scoring with Samantha Taylor from King with 4.18
Reagan Kinnie finished 12-over, an outing of 154 to land her at sixth. Taylor Hayes was just one shot shy of her teammate at seventh place, shooting 79 and 76 to conclude with +13, 155.
Freshman Jayla Sims competed in the event as an individual, posting a 159 to land in a tie for 12th.
Matilda Frovenholt got her first taste of team competition at Bristol, shaving one stroke off of her first round to end Tuesday with an 80, placing her at a tie for 15th. Tied with her was teammate Anna Davenport who served as a late entry individual. After a stellar 77 on Monday, she added 7 stokes to her second round score.
Rachel Watts was able to improve her second round game by three strokes, going from an 83 on Monday to 80 on Tuesday, concluding 22-over at 20th on the leaderboard as an individual.
Competing in her second event as an Eagle, sophomore Katie Medley ended her outing at 30th, scoring 81 and 89 for a 28-over outing.
