Tough second day sees Eagles take eighth-place at Spring Kickoff Intercollegiate

Final Results

FLEMING ISLAND, Fla. –With only one birdie to its name with 33 bogeys on Tuesday, the Carson-Newman women's golf team concluded the Women's Spring Kickoff Intercollegiate with an 8th-place finish on Tuesday.

The second day of competition was vastly different to the first day that saw the Eagles tie for the second most birdies on the round. Their one birdie in the second round moved them to a tie for seventh in the field for the category.

"The team struggled again today," head coach Suzanne Strudwick said. "We will have a meeting tomorrow to dissect the mistakes and come up with a plan of action for the next two weeks because this is unacceptable given the opportunities and facilities to practice this team has."

Taylor Hayes (Lake Ozark, Mo.) was still the highest-placing C-N member, going nine-over on Tuesday for a round of 80, bringing her total score to a 14-over 156 at a tie for 20th. She shot four shots higher than her Monday score.

She recorded the only birdie for the Eagles in the second round, giving her five for the entire tournament. She was tied for fourth on birdies through the entire field. She concluded the event tied for second on par three shooting with an even clip

Reagan Kinnie (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) had the most substantial turnaround for C-N in the second round. On Monday, she was +14 but battled in the second round to shoot even on all but four holes, those of which is shot bogeys on to garner a four-over round of 75. She moved up 19 spots on the leaderboard between the two rounds, concluding at a tie for 28th.

The final three Eagles -- Jayla Sims (Hixson, Tenn.), Matilda Frovenholt (Öjersjö, Sweden) and Rachel Watts (Newport, Tenn.) – all landed in a tie for 33rd with a total score of 162.

Freshman Sims' second round saw her shoot 12 bogeys and a double bogey for a fourteen-over score of 85, eight shots higher her opening round score.

Frovenholt, also a freshman, shot for bogey on seven holes with a double bogey. She shaved two strokes off of her first round score for a Tuesday round of 80, tying her third-lowest round score of the season.

Watts was four strokes higher on Tuesday compared to a 79 first round score. She was four-over through the first nine holes on the second round while she was eight-over in the back half, recording a trio of bogeys, a double bogey and was three-over on another hole.

"Hopefully (they) can rectify this downturn in results over the last two events and start performing like they should," Strudwick said.

Lenoir-Rhyne was the top team in the field with a +33 score of 601. Tusculum was the second-best team at 35-over while No. 11 Wingate was third at 40-over.

Individually, Lenoir-Rhyne's Abbey Hartsell was the only player to shoot under par for the tournament at two-under, landing her at the top of the leaderboard with a 140 total. Her teammate Ainee O'Connor and host team Lincoln Memorial's Lise Malherbe tied for second in the field with a +3 score of 146.

The Eagles will now get to enjoy a couple weeks away from competition before diving into the three-day Booby Nichols Memorial Intercollegiate at the Sevierville Golf Club. That tournament will take place March 18-20.
