ANDERSON, S.C. – The No. 24 Lady Eagles (5-1) picked up two wins on the diamond Sunday afternoon as they defeated the Trojans of Anderson (S.C.) (7-3) by scores of 10-0 and 9-1 in a regional doubleheader.

Game One – Carson-Newman 10, Anderson 0 (five innings)
Carson-Newman got on the board in the top of the third inning with four runs including back-to-back run-scoring doubles by sophomore Mary Shealy (Clinton, S.C.) and junior Ashley Boyd (Chattanooga, Tenn.).

The Lady Eagles picked up two more runs in the fourth as junior Leah Price (Spring City, Tenn.) and freshman Bri Shoemake (Ooltewah, Tenn.) each had RBI hits.

C-N scored four runs in the top of the fifth to give it a 10-0 advantage including a two-run home run by Boyd. Both Price and sophomore Cassidy Skeen (Powell, Tenn.) scored their second runs of the game in the inning as well.

Though Anderson was able to get a runner in scoring position, the Trojans could not score, and the game was called due to the eight-run advantage rule.

Boyd picked up the win on the mound for the Lady Eagles, moving to 3-0 on the year, as she allowed just three hits while striking out six. Anderson’s Alex Waldroup (LaGrange, Ga.) (2-1) suffered the loss, as she allowed six runs on nine hits in four innings of work.

Game Two – Carson-Newman 9, Anderson 1
The Lady Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Shoemake it a two-run home run, scoring Price who had just reached safely on an error by the pitcher.

Anderson responded in the bottom half of the frame with a two-out solo home run by Amber Duncan (Matthews, N.C.).

Carson-Newman would score three more runs in the third on three straight base hits and plated another runner in the top of the fourth to take a 6-1 lead.

In the top of the seventh, the Lady Eagles got three insurance runs for the 9-1 final score. Senior Sara Little (Calhoun, Ga.) led the inning off with a double to left field and was driven home two batters later by Shealy’s double to the same part of the park. Boyd cleared the bases with her second home run of the day to cap the scoring for C-N.

Carson-Newman’s Shealy (2-1) went the distance in the win, striking out eight and allowing just five hits. Kayla Hipp (Anderson, S.C.) lost her first decision of the year, allowing six runs on five hits in four innings of work.

Carson-Newman will play host to perennial regional power Georgia College & State on Thursday at the Lady Eagle Softball Complex. First pitch for game one of the doubleheader is slated for 2:00 p.m.
