SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Carson-Newman’s Sara Little (Calhoun, Ga.) hit her 28th career home run to become C-N’s all-time leader and the Lady Eagles allowed only three runs in five games to go 5-0 at the Mid-South Classic played this weekend in Spartanburg, S.C.

Little’s two-run blast in the fifth-inning of an 8-0 win on Saturday against Fairmont State moved her past former Lady Eagle All-American Whitney Hickam (27 career home runs) and into first all-time. An all-region selection in ’09, Little has four home runs this season.

Carson-Newman improves to 15-2 on the season with the perfect weekend.

Carson-Newman 3, University of Charleston (W.Va.) 1

Junior Ashley Boyd (Chattanooga, Tenn.) allowed five hits and an unearned run, while Little added two hits and two RBIs as the Lady Eagles won for the fifth time at the Mid-South Classic on Sunday morning, topping the University of Charleston (W.Va.), 3-1.

Boyd struck out four to improve to 9-0 on the season. Sophomore Mary Shealy (Clinton, S.C.) came on to record the final two outs of the game to pick up her second save.

Little gave C-N a 1-0 lead in the top half of the first, when she drove home freshman Bri Shoemake (Ooltewah, Tenn.), who singled with two outs, with a double to right field.

The senior first baseman delivered again with a two-out single in the third inning to plate junior Leah Price (Spring City, Tenn.) to give C-N a 2-0 lead.

Charleston put two runners on in the seventh with a single and a walk, but Shealy came on to get a strike out and force a fly ball to right field to end the game.

Carson-Newman 10, Coker 0 (5 Inn.)

Boyd fired a one-hitter and struck out four, while C-N put up two runs in each inning, as the Lady Eagles beat Coker College 10-0 in five innings on Saturday afternoon.

C-N pounded out 10 hits in win as both Shoemake and Little each had two hits and three RBIs. The top four spots in the C-N order combined for eight hits and eight RBIs.

Little blasted her record-setting home run during a six-run C-N fifth inning, and Shealy fired a complete-game, four-hitter as the Lady Eagles overpowered Fairmont State, 8-0, in five innings.

A Jessie Howard (Knoxville, Tenn.) triple and Shoemake single set the stage for Little’s opposite-field blast in the sixth.

Carson-Newman returns to action on Wednesday against Clark University of Atlanta. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Atlanta.
