Carson-Newman Sweeps King (Tenn.), 15-1 And 8-0, Wednesday Afternoon On The Road

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The Lady Eagles extended their winning streak to 17 games Wednesday afternoon as they picked up a pair of victories against King (Tenn.) of on the road. Carson-Newman (27-2) won the two contests by scores of 15-1 and 8-0 over the Lady Tornado (14-10).

The Lady Eagles got on the board with four runs in the top of the first highlighted by a two-run single to centerfield by freshman catcher Bri Shoemake (Ooltewah, Tenn.) and a RBI double down the right field line by Sara Little (Calhoun, Ga.).

C-N added four runs to go up 8-0 in the second inning. Junior third baseman Whitney Kee (Knoxville, Tenn.) had a two-run double in the frame.

Carson-Newman scored three in the top of the third as senior shortstop Jessie Howard (Knoxville, Tenn.) plated two runs with a double down the left field line.

After the Lady Eagles added another two runs in the top of the fourth, King spoiled the shutout with a single run in the bottom of the stanza. Emily Bennett (Erwin, Tenn.) led off the inning with a single and was driven home four batters later by Mackenzie Draine (Kingsport, Tenn.).

C-N had two more runs in the top of the fifth as junior centerfielder Whitney Durham (Rossville, Ga.) drove in two to cap the scoring for the contest.

Freshman Jennifer Long (Chattanooga, Tenn.) picked up her second win of the season in the circle for the Lady Eagles, striking out six and allowing just four runs over five innings of work. King’s Samantha Watts (Nashville, Tenn.) (6-5) suffered the loss.

Carson-Newman jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first as a two-run single by Durham highlighted the frame.

The Lady Eagles got two more runs in the top of the second stanza as Shoemake hit a home run down the left field line.

C-N got the run it needed to invoke the Eight-Run Advantage Rule in the third as junior second baseman Amber Hewitt (Ringgold, Ga.) led off with a triple and was driven in by junior left fielder Leah Price (Spring City, Tenn.).

Long (3-0) picked up her second win of the day, scattering four hits over five innings of work to complete the shutout. King’s Danielle Zimmerman (Kingsport, Tenn.) suffered the loss, falling to 8-5 on the season.

Shoemake finished the day 3-for-5 at the plate with five RBI while Hewitt was 4-for-6 with three runs scored and Durham was 3-for-7 with four RBI.

Carson-Newman returns home on Friday to take on the No. 11 Bears of Lenior-Rhyne in a battle of the unbeatens in the South Atlantic Conference. First pitch of Friday’s doubleheader is set for 1:00 p.m.
