Eakes takes home TSWA Player of the Week honors

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Carson-Newman senior first baseman Katie Eakes (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) has been presented with the Tennessee Sportswriters' Association's State Player of the Week award following Carson-Newman softball's 5-1 debut week, the organization announced Tuesday.

Eakes batted .500 (7-for-14) with one homer, seven RBI and three runs scored in six games for the Eagles.

The Mt. Juliet, Tenn., native singled, walked and scored a run in the first of two games against King and recorded a pair of two-run singles in the second contest versus the Tornado.

The senior infielder posted two hits, including a solo homer for the game's only run in the sixth inning off a 1-0 pitch, in the second of two outings against Leesz-McRae.  She singled and drove in a run in the first of two games versus Tiffin University.

She became the first Eagle to walk three times in a game since Lacie Rinus against Concord in 2018 in the nightcap with the Dragons. She also added an RBI in the second contest against the Dragons.

Eakes is the first Eagle to pick up a weekly honor from the TSWA since Shannon Smith was presented with Player of the Week laurels on Feb. 18, 2020.

Eakes and the rest of the Eagles are in action Wednesday at noon to open SAC play against Mars Hill. Coverage will be available on the Eagle Sports Network at cneagles.com/live.
