C-N Leaves Too Much on the Table in a Pair of Losses at Emory & Henry

EMORY, Va. – Carson-Newman (26-16, 13-9 SAC) tallied 14 runs on 29 hits in two games against Emory & Henry (29-17, 10-10 SAC) but stranded 23 on-base in the two contests, dropping both games in walk-off fashion.

The Eagles and the Wasps battled for ten innings in game one before C-N overcame a three-run deficit in game two to tie it at four before the Wasps walked it off in the bottom half of the final frame.

"As a team, we didn't deserve to win," head coach Michael Graves said. "We just didn't play smart… We left too many runners on base and had multiple baserunning mistakes that cost us runs and ended up getting us beat in game one, and in game two, we gave them most of their runs on outfield miscues… Two wins today would've put us in great position in conference and the region."

GAME ONE: Emory & Henry 11, Carson-Newman 10 (10 inn.)

The Eagles got some traffic on the basepaths early, as Hayden Dye (Knoxville, Tenn.) ripped a one-out single before Santana Anderson (Fairmont, N.C.) reached on a two-out error, but C-N stranded two aboard in the first frame.

E&H got to work quickly in the home half of the first, as Danielle King stroked a one-out solo home run to give the Wasps the lead. E&H would add another in the frame as Abigail Street scored one on an RBI single to provide the Wasps with a 2-0 lead after one.

In the top of the second inning, C-N strung together four consecutive one-out singles to draw even. Brooklyn Lucero (Loma, Colo.), Abbi Martin (Gadsden, Ala.), and Addie Saunders loaded the bases on three straight base knocks before Hayden Dye tied the game at two with a two-RBI single.

Syerra Rogers (Graysville, Tenn.) found her groove in the bottom of the second, striking out two of the three Wasps that came to the plate.

The Eagles had a significant opportunity to take the lead in the third, as Kennady Warder doubled with one away. C-N loaded the bases with two outs after a walk and an error, but a lineout ended the frame, and the game remained tied.

Despite a two-out single in the bottom half of the frame, Rogers struck out two to complete her second scoreless frame. However, C-N went down in order in the top of the fourth, leaving the door open for E&H to regain the lead.

After a leadoff single, Liberty Johnson mashed a two-run home run to give E&H the lead at 4-2. The Wasps tallied another one-out single, but Rogers stranded it aboard by retiring the next two.

C-N got back on the board in the top of the fifth, as Santana Anderson singled to lead off the frame before moving to second on a Mari Robbins (Sweetwater, Tenn.) groundout. Syerra Rogers helped her cause by ripping an RBI single to slice the deficit in half.

The first two wasps reached in the bottom half before Hannah Booth blasted a three-run run shot to give E&H its largest lead at 7-3.

The Eagles cut into the deficit in the sixth as Addie Saunders singled before Hayden Dye punched a single through the right side, and Saunders came in to score on an E&H throwing error to make it 7-4.

Lexi Lacy (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) entered for the bottom of the sixth, and despite the first two Wasps reaching, Lacy forced a double play and a groundout to end the sixth inning.

C-N made the most of its final opportunity in the seventh, as Kennady Warder and Mari Robbins reached on back-to-back singles to bring the tying run to the plate. Syerra Rogers doubled to score one before Brooklyn Lucero ripped a two-RBI single to get the game even at seven.

Mariyn Waterman (Oakdale, Calif.) entered the circle for the bottom of the seventh and made quick work of the Wasps, retiring all three E&H hitters in the seventh to send the game to extra innings.

C-N regained the lead in the 8th, as Hayden Dye singled to lead off the frame, moving the runner on second to third, putting runners on the corners with no one out. Macauley Bailey (Cross Plains, Tenn.) notched the go-ahead knock, scoring Addie Sauders from third to give C-N an 8-7 edge. C-N loaded the bases with one away but left them stranded as the final two Eagles were retired.

E&H quickly drew even as Karsen Simpson scored the tying run with an RBI single. However, despite having runners on first and second with no one out, Mariyn Waterman forced a foul out and an inning-ending double play to send the game to the 9th.

The momentum swung back the way of the Eagles in the top half of the 9th, as Abbi Martin scored one on an RBI single to reinstate C-N's one-run lead. The next two Eagles went down on strikes, as C-N headed to the bottom half of the 9th with a one-run edge. E&H swung the pendulum again in the bottom half of the 9th, scoring one on an RBI groundout.

The Eagles threw another punch in the 10th, as Macauley Bailey reached on an error before Kennady Warder poked an RBI single to give C-N the lead again. Despite runners on first and second with one out, the Wasps were able to limit the damage by retiring the next two C-N hitters.

E&H ended the marathon in the bottom half, as Hannah Booth and Rachel Hill roped back-to-back RBI doubles, as the Wasps walked it off in ten innings.

Syerra Rogers dealt the first five innings, allowing eight hits and seven earned runs while striking out seven. Lexi Lacy dealt an inning in relief, allowing a hit and no earned runs. Mariyn Waterman is dealt the loss despite allowing just three hits in three innings.

Destiny Good pitched 5.1 innings, allowing three earned runs on ten hits while striking out two. Malorie Reeves entered for 4.2 innings of work, allowing three earned runs on eight hits and striking out ten.

C-N outhit Emory & Henry 18-12, but the Eagles stranded plenty of opportunities throughout the contest, leaving 15 aboard, the most C-N has left stranded since March 1st against Southern Wesleyan. The Eagles' 47 at-bats were the most they've ever had in a game.

GAME TWO:

C-N created traffic again in the first inning of game two, as Hayden Dye and Macauley Bailey notched back-to-back hits to put runners on second and third with one out. However, E&H's Malorie Reeves retired the next two to keep the game scoreless.

The Wasps' Mackenzie Williams led off the frame with a single and was immediately moved into scoring position on a C-N throwing error before a wild pitch moved her to third. However, Lorelei Spradlin (Blacksburg, Va.) forced soft contact from the next three E&H hitters to get out of the first unscathed.

After a 1-2-3 top of the 2nd for C-N, E&H got going in the bottom half. The Wasps ripped off five consecutive hits, including two for extra bases, giving the Wasps a 3-0 lead after two.

C-N tallied two one-out base hits off the bats of Addie Saunders and Hayden Dye to bring the tying run to the plate in the third, but a strikeout and a soft fly out to right kept the three-run lead intact. Despite a one-out single, Spradlin retired the next two to strand a runner on first to end the 3rd.

The first two Eagles were set down in the 4th, but Mari Robbins and Brooklyn Lucero gave C-N life with back-to-back singles. However, a groundout to first ended the threat. Despite a two-out double in E&H's half of the 4th, Spradlin stranded the runner in scoring position to keep the deficit at three after four.

With two away in the 5th, Macauley Bailey cranked a solo shot to center, giving the Eagle offense life and cutting into the deficit, making it 3-1. However, the Wasps immediately reinstated the three-run edge on a Lydia Taylor leadoff solo home run to make it 4-1 after five.

C-N started the 6th with a Santana Anderson single. Despite two consecutive outs, Brooklyn Lucero doubled with two away before Abbi Martin ripped a two-RBI single to get the Eagles within one. Spradlin worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the 6th, giving the meat of the C-N order a shot in the top of the 7th.

Hayden Dye walked to lead off the seventh before Macauley Bailey doubled, putting the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position with no one out. Santana Anderson tied the game with one away, cashing in an RBI groundout to even the battle at four apiece. C-N could not bring in the go-ahead run, sending the nightcap to the bottom of the 7th tied at four.

E&H put the winning run aboard with a Danielle King leadoff single in the home half of the 7th before Lydia Taylor singled to put runners on the corners with no one out. Despite forcing soft contact for the first out, the Wasps walked it off for the second time on a Katelyn Siekerka sacrifice fly.

Lorelei Spradlin was dealt the loss, tossing 6.2 innings while allowing five runs on 12 hits, striking out three.

Malorie Reeves earned her 18th win in a complete game effort, allowing four runs on 11 hits and striking out seven.

With the cancellation of the midweek matchup with Milligan, C-N will have nine days off before concluding its regular season on the road at Lenoir-Rhyne.
