Carson-Newman volleyball breaks out brooms to beat UNCP in sweep

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – After falling in two, five-set matches in the Carson-Newman Classic and getting swept by Palm Beach Atlantic Friday night, Carson-Newman (1-3) stormed back with a morning sweep (25-22, 25-22, 25-20) of UNC Pembroke (5-6) Saturday morning at Holt Fieldhouse.

Ashley Ferris (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Rachel Harper (Chattanooga, Tenn.) paced the Eagles with 11 kills apiece.  Both players were efficient in their attack; Ferris hit .556 and Harper .360 for the match.

As a team, Carson-Newman wailed away with a .319 team attack percentage.  Head volleyball coach Shannon Mincey said the Eagles have been working to increase their hitting percentage and inspiration came from a source outside the team.

"Our athletic director (Allen Morgan) even gave us a talk about aggressiveness so it was great to see that transpire onto the court today," Mincey said.

The Eagles wore shirts before the tournament that read "silent killers" on the back; however, for Mincey, the C-N attack was anything but silent.

"We had many fans cheering us on and our hitters increased the energy in the gym," Mincey said. "It was great to see their celebrations."

Senior libero Angelle Hayes (Brentwood, Tenn.) returned to her C-N Classic All-Tournament Team form by digging 17 balls against UNCP.

"Angelle had some personal goals today to better our offense," Mincey said. "Her accuracy in transitional digs to kills was very consistent today."

Hayes was fronted by a solid block. Ferris picked up two solo blocks and a pair of block assists to lead C-N's five team blocks.
