Eagles swept by Anderson in regular season closer

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Carson-Newman volleyball (14-16, 11-7 SAC) dropped their final regular season match-up at the Abney Athletic Center against the Anderson Trojans (24-4, 16-2 SAC) on Friday night.

"Anderson played a very stable and composed match tonight. We did well competing through many points but came short in the end." said head coach Ashley Tiernan. "We are looking forward to the start of the SAC tournament on Monday against Lenoir-Rhyne"

C-N drops to a 14-16 overall record on the season, going 11-7 in conference play, 8-1 at home, and 3-10 on the road.

In their regular season finale, the Eagles led Anderson in kills (38-37), assists (35-32), and blocks (7.0-6.0). The Trojans led in digs (43-40), hitting percentage (.247-.144), and service aces (4-2).

Julia Wheeler and Rylie Sargent led the match with nine recorded kills each, with Sargent having the higher hitting percentage at .348.

Emmagrace Cobb followed with eight kills and a fiery .545 hitting percentage. She also collected five block assists for a match high.

Bennett McCombs led the Eagles defensively with 11 digs.

Though Carson-Newman led offensively in the first and second set, they also collected more total hitting errors (22-13) and service errors (7-2).

Set 1 (23-25)

In their most tightly contested set of the match, the Eagles and Trojans tied a total of eight times, with a single lead change. Carson-Newman held their highest lead by three points at 10-7, but the Trojans took over after a tie at 12-12 and pushed ahead to their highest lead at 18-14. C-N managed to climb back from their fall within a point at 18-17 and again at 24-23, but could not hold off a set sealing point from Anderson.

Set 2 (18-25)

Carson-Newman led both in kills (12-11) and digs (15-14) but could not come back from a 12-6 Anderson lead early on. The Trojans held the Eagles to at least a five point deficit for the remainder of play and concluded the set from a Carson-Newman attacking error.
