L-R out blocks C-N in 3-1 victory Saturday

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (4-7, 2-4 SAC) jumped out to a set advantage, but Lenoir-Rhyne roared back in the next three to win 3-1 (21-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-21) Saturday afternoon at Holt Fieldhouse.

Haley Rhyne crushed 15 kills, tying C-N's Laruen Santarelli (Colorado Spring, Colo.) for the match high.  While the teams were nearly even in kills (49-47 in favor of the Eagles), Carson-Newman made 15 more attack errors than the Bears, hitting .089 to L-R's .191.

"We made it pretty easy for Haley Rhyne, seeing as how we didn't block her at all." Carson-Newman head volleyball coach Shannon Mincey said. "We emphasized (blocking) prior to the match - blocking would be key to this game."

L-R had nine blocks to the Eagles five.  Sabina Papala (Laziska Gorne, Poland) picked up three of C-N's five shot stoppers.

Carson-Newman aced the Bears 16 times on serve, the highest tally of the season.  Rachel Harper's (Chattanooga, Tenn.) five aces are the most for any Eagle on the year.

"Angelle Hayes (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Harper played very well today," Mincey said. "It's sad to see wasted effort."

Hayes picked up 22 digs, keeping her on her five dig/set pace for the season.

The Eagles will try to get back on the winning track Tuesday night at 7 p.m. against Lees-McRae.  Live stats and video for the match will be available at cneagles.com.
