Eagles beat Erskine and King in Bristol Saturday

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Eagles (8-7) volleyball team picked up a pair of victories on Saturday, defeating Erskine in three sets (27-25, 25-21, 25-13 and King in four sets (27-29, 25-20, 27-25, 25-23) at the King College Student Center Complex.

The victories improve Carson-Newman's record to 8-7 in the 2012 season, and the Eagles have won their last four matches.

"Our team used several personnel today to get our wins," said Carson-Newman head coach Shannon Mincey. "We shuffled different players in at different moments using our strengths. I was pleased with our defensive effort allowing us to utilize our middles."

Senior middle hitter Sabina Papala (Laziska Gorne, Poland) led Carson-Newman past Erskine as she recorded 12 kills. Papala hit .375 in that match with the 12 kills, and three errors in her 24 attacks. Also with double-digit kills was sophomore middle hitter Ashley Ferris (Knoxville, Tenn.) with her 10 kills, registering a .471 attack percentage in her 17 attacks.

"Both Papala and Ferris ran the court well, Ferris seemed unstoppable against Erskine," Mincey said. "She had that magic touch on each attempt."

Senior libero Angelle Hayes (Brentwood, Tenn.) led Carson-Newman with 17 digs against Erskine, and senior outside hitter Rachael Bowlin (Morristown, Tenn.) also had double-digit digs with 13 digs with her five kills.

Carson-Newman had won its last 11 sets dating back to Sept. 29 before dropping the first set of the King match 29-27. The Eagles rallied to win the next three, winning 25-20 in the second set while Carson-Newman won the final two sets by two-point margins.

The Eagles clinched the King victory with a kill from Bowlin, her 12th of the match. Bowlin had a doubleh-double against the Lady Tornado with her 12 kills and 17 digs.

Carson-Newman also saw double-digit kills from sophomore outside hitter Rachel Harper (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and sophomore outside hitter Lauren Santarelli (Colorado Sprins, Colo.) who both collected 15 in the four sets. Harper hit .520 while Santarelli hit .462 in the win, and Hayes once again paced C-N with her 22 digs.

"Our blocking needs to improve before we move into conference play," said Mincey. "That will be something we focus on this week."

Carson-Newman will return to conference play when the Eagles next play on Tues. Oct. 9 against Lincoln Memorial in Harrogate at 7 p.m.
