Eagles fall to Peach Belt competition

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Carson-Newman (10-14, 7-5 SAC) dropped a pair of matches on Saturday to Augusta (18-4, 7-1) and Lander (23-2, 7-0) University at the Finis Horne Arena. 

After finding little success on the road this season, the Eagles stand 2-8 in away matches and 3-5 at neutral sites. 

C-N v Augusta (25-23, 14-25, 17-25, 14-25)

Carson-Newman fell to the Jaguars in the first match at the crossover in Greenwood, S.C. 

Julia Wheeler led both Carson-Newman and Augusta with 18 kills. Jazmyn Wheeler followed right behind with 16. Skylor Weaver, Emmagrace Cobb, and Taylor Keeran all had three apiece. 

Blair Cherry and Trinity Hafey tied to lead the Eagles defensively with 12 each. Mckenna Hall and Bennett McCombs followed directly behind with 11. Dariana Luna led the match with 26 saves. She also tallied two service aces against the Eagles. 

The Jaguars outperformed the Eagles in kills (55-31), hitting percentage (.255- .076), digs (78-61), and blocks (10.0- 4.0)

Set 1 (25-23)

Carson-Newman and Augusta went point for point in set one, with 13 total score ties. The Eagles gave up a brief lead to the Jaguars at 17-14 but responded with a seven point run to put them in the lead 21-17. Augusta closed back within a point but C-N did not relent their lead, closing out set one with two points over the Jaquars. 

Set 2 (14-25)

Augusta responded in set two with a 19-9 head over the Eagles to start off play. C-N battled back for a few points but could not hold off the five point run that gave Augusta set two. 

Set 3 (17-25)

The Jaguars carried their momentum into set three and began with another substantial lead over C-N at 17-9 that could not be salvaged. Augusta earned 17 kills in the third frame and kept C-N at a .077 hitting percentage. 

Set 4 (14-25)

Carson-Newman succumbed to the Jaguars in set four with a -.047 hitting percentage and only four kills. To close out the match, Augusta rallied 13 kills, 30 digs and 4.0 blocks. C-N had 13 kills, 24 digs, and 1.0 block. 

C-N v Lander (28-30, 19-25, 17-25)

In their second match of the day, the Eagles fell to the hosts of the crossover in straight sets.

Julia Wheeler led offensively with 12 kills. Madison Fisher and Taylor Keeran snagged five a piece for the Eagles. 

Mckenna Hall tallied 17 digs and Bennett McCombs was next with 11. 

The Lander Bearcats outperformed C-N in kills (48-32), service aces (10-5), digs (56-47), and blocks (7.0-2.0)

Set 1 (28-30)

Lander took the opening frame after an exciting 13 ties and six lead changes. The Eagles notched a .273 hitting percentage over .214 from the Bearcats. Madison Fisher recorded 3 kills in seven attempts with no errors for a team high .429 effieciency. After nine ties from 20-20 until the finale, kills from Lauren Dow and Christina Aguayo sealed the set for Lander.

Set 2 (19-25)

In contrast to the first set, frame two only held two ties and no lead swaps. Lander allowed only six kills for the Eagles, collecting 27 digs and 3.0 blocks.

Set 3 (17-25)

Taylor Keeran led the Eagles in set three with three kills. She was followed by Julia Wheeler and Blair Cherry who each had two. As a unit, they tallied nine digs, no blocks, and a .161 hitting percentage. 

Carson-Newman returns home to Holt Fieldhouse for a SAC match against UVA Wise on Tuesday at 6:00 pm.
