Eagle volleyball drops three-set match to Anderson

ANDERSON, S.C. – The Anderson Trojans (8-5, 1-3 SAC) used a strong attack to keep Carson-Newman (3-5, 1-2 SAC) at bay (25-15, 25-18, 25-19) in three sets Saturday  afternoon at the Abney Center.

The Eagles were paced by Lauren Santarelli's  (Colorado Springs, Colo.) 14 kills and .355 hit percentage.

"Our rhythm was off today," Carson-Newman head volleyball coach Shannon Mincey said. "Santarelli did a nice job, but that shows that volleyball takes a team effort, we can't win with just one."

Anderson held C-N to a team .084 attack percentage while the Trojans blasted away at .357.  Shannon Gillespie led Anderson with 14 kills and Hailey Pittman contributed 11.

"We are disheartened today with how we played," Mincey said. "Our hitting percentage was unacceptable for a team who desires big things."

Angelle Hayes (Brentwood, Tenn.) picked up 17 digs for the Eagles to continue a three-match streak averaging more than five digs/set for each match.  However, Mincey said the Eagles weren't able to carry over momentum from a 3-1 win over Newberry Friday night.

"It is unfortunate to grab a win last night and return it with a loss," Mincey said. "Anderson played consistent, I'm sure their five-set loss last night regrouped them."

Carson-Newman returns home Tuesday with an opportunity to bring its SAC record to .500 against Mars Hill at 7 p.m.  The Eagles play their next four games within the friendly confines of Holt Fieldhouse.  Live stats and video for the Mars Hill game will be available at cneagles.com.
