ORLANDO, Fla. – The Carson-Newman Eagles are tied for first and sophomore Jonathan Kim-Moss (Mississaugua, Ontario) is alone in third after the first two rounds of the Rollins Invitational, played Monday at Rio Pinar Golf Club.
The Eagles bounced back from a 296 (+1) in Monday's first 18 holes to shoot a 1-under (287) on the day's second round to move into a tie with South Atlantic Conference foe and rival Newberry at 583 (+7) through the 54-hole event's first two rounds.
Kim-Moss improved on his even-par (72) opening round with a 69 (-3) to close the day to move himself and the Eagles up the team leaderboard. The round is Kim-Moss' third in the 60's in his last four rounds. He trails Newberry's Chandler Gruenmeier and Rollins' Spencer Cole by one shot.
Carson-Newman is trying to win its second collegiate event in as many weeks. The Eagles won the Tanglewood Invitational last week in Clemmons, N.C.
Junior Gavin Hay (Glasgow, Scotland) also improved from morning to afternoon. The junior shot a 1-under 71 in the afternoon to rebound from a 74 (+2) to start the day and gave the Eagle two rounds under par. He is tied for 11th.
All five Eagle golfers are in the top half of the field.
Senior Liam Ashby (Dublin, Ireland) also improved from the morning to the afternoon round. He followed his opening 75 with a 1-over 73 to close the day and is tied for 23rd.
Junior Michael Horenkamp (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) is tied for 28th after a pair of 75s, while senior Alex Coughlin (Jefferson City, Tenn.) is 31st. He shot 77 (+5) and 74 (+2) in his two rounds.
Rollins College is in third, two strokes behind C-N and Newberry at 585. No. 13 Columbus State is in fourth place (590), seven strokes back of C-N and Newberry, while No. 20 Florida Southern (592) is in fifth, nine strokes off the lead. No. 3 Lynn is in eighth at the tournament, 11 strokes off the pace.
The tournament concludes with 18 holes on Tuesday.
