Stock leads C-N to start SAC Championships

HICKORY, N.C. – With four golfers making their SAC Championship debut, it was Luke Stock putting together No. 13 Carson-Newman's best score in the opening round.

No. 13 Carson-Newman is in sixth place, scoring a 8-over 296 in the opening round. Only ten strokes separate C-N from second place Lenoir-Rhyne. No. 1 Anderson leads the field after day 1 with an 8-under 280 score.

Completing his first career round at the SAC championships, Luke Stock (Oxted, England) scored a 1-under 71. The junior made two birdies and two bogeys to record an even par front nine. After a bogey on the 10th hole, Stock found a groove, making birdie on three of his next five holes (11-15). He finished his round bogey, par, and par. The under-par round is his fifth consecutive under par opening round in a tournament.

Elliot MacGregor (Shepperton, Middlesex) got off to a quick start, going 2-under on the front nine. He birdied holes 3 and 8 on that opening nine. The sophomore made three more birdies on the back nine. His chance at an under-par opening round was spoiled by a triple bogey on the 17th hole. His 3-over back nine score secured a 1-over 73 in round one.

Hayden Hunneke (Chattanooga, Tenn.) was C-N's third best opening round score, a 3-over 75. He made eight pars, five bogeys, four birdies and a double bogey in the opening round. The graduate student went 1-over on the back nine, where he started the nine 1-under headed into his final two holes.

It was an up and down opening round for Jake Mynatt (Knoxville, Tenn.). The graduate student's front nine consisted of three pars, two birdies, two bogeys, one triple bogey and one eagle. The /He got off to a great start on the back nine, making birdie on holes 11 and 12. He went into the final three holes at 1-under, but finished the day 6-over on those holes to record a 5-over 77.

Aidan Powter (Sydney, Australia) started his first SAC tournament with a 7-over 79. The junior made par on seven of his first nine holes to go 3-over on the opening nine. After going 4-over on his first three holes to start the back nine, Powter settled in to make par on his final six holes of the day.

The Eagles had the best scoring average on the par 5s, going 9-under par on day 1. C-N also tied for the most birdies (18) in the opening round.
