C-N battles through delayed start to maintain first after day 1 of Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate

Day 1 Results

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn.- Despite a delayed start, and miserable course conditions, No.21 Carson-Newman is in first place after the first round of the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate.

The Eagles hold first place over Walters State by three strokes. C-N is one of four teams under par after the opening round. 280 team strokes in round one is the the lowest this spring and the second lowest this season.

"Nice rounds to start the tournament from the Eagles today," Carson-Newman head coach Randy Wylie said. "Very pleased with how Elliot MacGregor and Luke Stock led the team with a couple of solid rounds in the 60s. It's always nice in college golf when you're counting scores that include no rounds over par. Long way to go in this tournament, we've got to keep grinding."

No. 21 Carson-Newman wasted no time after the delayed start, with three of the five Eagles making birdie on their first hole of the day.

Picking up where he left off last season, Elliot MacGregor (Shepperton, Middlesex) began his tournament with another 4-under 68, the same score he posted in the opening round last season. All three of his Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate rounds have been under par. The sophomore had plenty of circles on the scorecard, making six birdies in the opening round. Four of those birdies came on the front nine. He started and finished his day with a birdie. MacGregor is tied for third after day 1.

Luke Stock (Oxted, England) delivered C-N's second under par round of the opening round. The junior records his third under par round of the spring and his sixth in his career. Stock made four birdies and one bogey in the first round. Those four birdies came on holes 3,4,7 and 10. All 3 of his opening rounds this spring season have been under par. After round one, he is tied for seventh.

Like MacGregor, Jake Mynatt (Knoxville, Tenn.) completed his third consecutive under par round of golf at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate. His opening round 1-under 71 was highlighted by four birdies on the front nine, carding a 4-under 32. The graduate student made six pars and three bogeys on the back nine.

Hayden Hunneke (Chattanooga, Tenn.) produced his 12th consecutive par or better round of golf. The graduate student got out to a fast start, making birdie on three of his first four holes. He made four total birdies in round one, while totaling 11 pars.

Antonio Farinella (Knoxville, Tenn.) carded an opening round 5-over 77. The senior made two birdies in the round. Farinella played his final seven holes of the day at 1-under par.

Individually, Aidan Powter (Sydney, Australia) made twelve pars in the opening round. The junior's opening round was highlighted by an eagle on the par 5 3rd hole. He also made one birdie en route to a 3-over 75.

Carson-Newman recorded the most birdies (20) and had the lowest scoring average on the par 5s (4.45) in round one.

Tomorrow's second round begins at 10:30 a.m.
