Stock's stellar second round highlights day one of Queens Invitational

KANNAPOLIS, N.C.- Carson-Newman men's golf is in 9th place after the first day of the 2022 Queens Invitational.

The Eagles were tied for 9th after round one with a team score of 298. C-N shaved nine strokes off its first-round team score but finds itself in a tie for 10th place after day one. The Eagles are only 11 strokes off 4th place.

"Tough day today for us, both rounds were disappointing," Carson-Newman head coach Randy Wylie said. "Really nice round this afternoon by Luke Stock. We're hoping for a strong finish tomorrow."

Jake Mynatt opened the tournament with a team-best 2-over 73. The graduate student recorded three birdies in the round, including two on the back nine in a four-hole stretch. He dropped five strokes in his second round, carding a 7-over 78. He started his second round 1-over through his first eleven holes, but finished the final seven holes with two bogeys and two double bogeys

Elliot MacGregor played well to start, beginning his first round with back-to-back birdies. He finished his opening round with three birdies as well. Despite a triple bogey and a double bogey, he scored a 3-over 74 to begin his day.

The sophomore was phenomenal on the front nine in round two. He made four birdies on the front nine to shoot a 4-under 31. Three bogeys and a triple bogey hurt him on the back nine, but he still managed to improve his score by a stroke with a 2-over 73.

Luke Stock also made three birdies in his opening round of 4-over 75. He made birdies on both par 5s on the back nine. Stock was just getting warmed up in round one. He began his second round with back-to-back birdies and through his first eleven holes of round two, he was 4-under par. He made four birdies through the stretch of holes 13-17. He played his final seven holes even, en route to a team-best 4-under 67 for the second round. He finished the day with a team-best eight birdies.

Hayden Hunneke shot a 5-over 76 in his opening round. His only birdie in round one came on the par 5, 14th hole. The graduate student dropped five shots from rounds one to two, firing an even par 71. He was very consistent, making two birdies and two bogeys are each nine.

Taylor Kilgore finished his opening round with a 7-over 78. He made two birdies, one of which came on the front nine, where he was just 1-over par. The Kingsport native ended his second round of the day with a 9-over 80. He made two more birdies, bringing his day total of birdies to four.

Playing as an individual, junior Aaron Johns carded a 7-over 78 to begin the day. He made one birdie; it came on the par 5 14th hole. Johns got out to a good start in round two, going 1-over through his first nine holes. He made two birdies in that stretch. His final nine holes of round two he finished 9-over par for a second round 10-over 81.

C-N finished day 1 of the event with the second most birdies (29). The Eagles played the par fives the third best at 9-under par on day 1.
