ROCK HILL, S.C. – For the first time since April 2021, Carson-Newman has been awarded a Men's Tennis Player of the Week honor. Junior Marc Janse (Zeewolde, Netherlands) was named this week's recipient, as announced by the South Atlantic Conference Monday morning.
After having one of the best seasons in CNMT history in 2020-21, the junior has once again started 2022 with a near perfect record on the courts. So far this season, Janse has gone 3-1 from number two singles, as his lone loss came against number 26 ranked Ryan Gaskin of North Georgia. Meanwhile, Janse and sophomore Lars Hordijk have gone 2-2 from number one doubles, including winning two straight in the early stages of 2022.
This is the first time an Eagle has landed the honor of men's tennis Player of the Week since Janse was awarded the laurels in April 2017 following his 9-0 start to 2020-21.
Last week, the Eagles saw a pair of nonconference victories against the Young Harris Mountain Lions and Lees-McRae Bobcats. Friday saw Janse blow open the Eagles lead to 4-0 over the Mountain Lions as he captured a 6-4, 7-5 result from number two singles as C-N looked to pull out the clean sweep.
Then, on Saturday against the Bobcats, Janse helped push the C-N advantage to 2-0, after the Eagles won the doubles point, with a 6-0, 6-3 victory in number two singles. This pushed his 2022 record to the current 3-1 as it stands ahead of the Eagles' next match on Tuesday.
"With very strong doubles, we got the doubles point, and the first three singles points were just dominated from beginning to end," graduate coach Gabriel Dabdab said.
The Eagles return to action next Tuesday as they hit the road for their first true road trip of 2022. C-N will head to Sewanee, Tenn. for a matchup with the Tigers on Feb. 17 at 4:00 p.m.
