Lady Eagles Place Four On All-SAC Teams

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The No. 22 Carson-Newman Lady Eagles saw four of their players named to the 2009-10 All-South Atlantic Conference Teams. The announcement was made on Friday morning by the SAC office as a part of the 2010 Food Lion SAC Tournament.

“I am extremely proud of these young ladies,” said Head Coach Dean Walsh. "These honors are well-deserved, but they are more focused on what we have left to do than individual achievement.”

Senior forward Shari Buford (Hampton, Ga.) was selected to the first team while guards senior Ashley Kyle (Jefferson City, Tenn.) and junior Mandy Mendenhall (Kingston Springs, Tenn.) received second-team honors.

Buford is averaging 12.7 points and 10.4 rebounds per game and is shooting 51.6 percent from the field. Kyle leads the team in scoring (14.1 ppg) and assists (5.0 apg) while Mendenhall is putting up 13.7 points per contest and has hit a team-high 40 three-point field goals on the season.

“It’s great to be honored as an individual, but we want to do well as a team and to win the (tournament) championship this weekend,” added Buford.

“It’s really good accomplishment,” said Kyle. “We need to take it further and win the SAC tournament and do well in the region.”

“I’m glad that I got chosen but I just want to do my best to help the team win,”
said Mendenhall.

Candis Clear
(Memphis, Tenn.) was named to the SAC All-Freshman Team as well.

“It was a big surprise when I found out,” said Clear. “I’m really grateful that I was chosen but I am more focused on the team succeeding than individual honors.”

Buford was named statistical champion for blocks per game (3.19) and Kyle led the SAC this year in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.03).

Carson-Newman was the statistical champion in four categories. The Lady Eagles led the league in scoring offense (78.9 ppg), field goal percentage (43.9 %), steals (12.37 spg) and blocks (6.0 bpg.).
