Carson-Newman’s Shari Buford Named All-Southeast Region

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman senior forward Shari Buford (Hampton, Ga.) has been named All-Southeast Region by the WBCA and by Daktronics. The all-region teams have been released in conjunction with the upcoming NCAA Division II regional tournaments that will be held across the nation this weekend.

“We’re very proud of her,” said Head Coach Dean Walsh. “She’s worked very hard to achieve this level of play. She came to Carson-Newman in the fall of 2006 as a raw, talented athlete and her numbers speak for themselves in what she has accomplished.”

Buford, a 2009-10 All-South Atlantic Conference first team honoree, was chosen as one of the top five players in the Southeast Region by the WBCA and is now one of 40 finalists for WBCA All-America honors.

She was also picked to the Daktronics All-Southeast Region First Team, which is selected on by the sports information directors of the southeast region with voting powered by ATHLETICSITE.COM. As a first-team selection, Buford is now moves on for consideration as an All-American.

Buford, who is averaging a double-double on the season (12.7 points and 10.4 rebounds), is also sixth in the country with 3.1 blocks per contest and has posted 17 double-doubles on the year.

She is just the third player to eclipse 1000 points and 1000 rebounds at Carson-Newman and is the only player to have 1000 points, 1000 rebounds and 200 blocks. Buford’s career totals currently sit at 1467 points, 1026 rebounds and 207 blocks.

The Lady Eagles have reached the NCAA Division II Southeast Region Tournament for the second straight year and the third time in four years. C-N will face off against league foe Lenoir-Rhyne on Friday at 8:30 p.m., in Finnis Horne Arena on the campus of Lander University in Greenwood, S.C.
