C-N set to host program's first home tournament

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – For the first time in program history, Carson-Newman is gearing up to host a two-day long tournament that will bring three other teams to Mossy Creek on Friday and Saturday.

Head coach Kody DuBarry's team welcomes Huntingdon, Austin Peay and rival Lincoln Memorial for the event.

This tournament will mark the first-ever meeting between the Eagles and Huntingdon (2-7).

In its second year as a program, head coach Latonia Brady's team enters the tournament following a 5-0 shutout victory over Principia during the final day of the Huntingdon College Beach Tournament. They were 1-2 in the tournament, losing the first two matches to Spring Hill and LMU with 5-0 and 4-1 decision, respectively.

Austin Peay (2-8) is led by head coach Taylor Mott. Junior Cecily Gable and sophomore Ginny Gerig have been the top duo for the group this season with a 3-7 record. They are currently on a five-match losing streak.

The Governors ride into Mossy Creek with seven-consecutive losses. Their pair of wins this season came in a close 3-2 match against New Orleans to open the season followed by a 4-1 win over Jacksonville State on March 3.

The Governors hold a 1-0 series lead against the Eagles. The lone match between the two team was on March 17, 2017 when the Governors took a 4-1 victory in the Governors Beach Duals Tournament. The only match the Eagles were successful in that day was at the No. 3 spot as Morgan Ballard and Allie Foster defeated Kaitlyn Teeter and MiMi Arrington in a three-set battle, 21-14, 17-21, 15-12.

Lincoln Memorial (3-1) returns to Jefferson City for the second time this season. The last time the 'Splitters came to town, they defeated C-N in its season opener, 4-1. Gabrielle Bailey (Pompano Beach, Fla.) and Micah Palmer (White Pine, Tenn.) gave the Eagles an early 1-0 lead with two-consecutive 21-16 set wins over Tone Gill and Danielle Stachura, but that was the only lead the Eagles saw on the day as LMU took the remaining four matches.

Since that meeting, the Railsplitters saw action in the Huntingdon Tournament where they went 2-1 in matches there. They were swept by Spring Hill on the first day, 5-0, before winning back-to-back matches the following day – a 4-1 win over the hosting Hawks and a 5-0 shutout of Principia.

Abby Cash and Lindsey Narter have become the new top duo for LMU with a 2-1 record at the spot and a 1-0 record as the second seed. They are currently on a two-match winning streak just as Danielle Ged and Hailey Lake are. The tandem has one win at the No. 1 spot, that win being over C-N, while garnering a 2-1 record as the second seed.
