JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - After their opening day at the UTC invitational, the Eagles finished with one win and one loss.
They began their morning bright and early against the Tusculum Pioneers at 8 am. Tusculum took the match 4-1, with their only loss coming from Jenny Ille and Camryn Ehlers in the fourth flight. Ille and Ehlers took their match in two sets with scores of 21-18 and 21-19.
Seeds two, four, and five all went to three sets but Carson-Newman could not clinch the victories.
The Eagles concluded day one at the Showdown with a sweeping vicotry over Alabama natives, Jacksonville State. Carson-Newman is now 2-1 against JSU in program history.
Carson-Newman had a dominating performance over the Gamecocks and won in just two sets in 4 out of the 5 seeds. Ava Fountain and Paige Halcrow took their match to three sets but sealed the deal with a 15-5 win over Brooklyn Schiffli and Caty Havekost.
