Carson-Newman Claims First Place in Lady Falcon/McNairy Invitational After USGA Rules Interpretation

BADIN, N.C. - After reviewing United States Golf Association rule 33-2B/1, officials determined on Wednesday that the final round of the Lady Falcon/McNairy Invitational will be counted.

Three sets of tees on holes 5, 8 and 11 were moved after the final round had begun on Tuesday, and since the final round scores did not provide a distinct and significant advantage or disadvantage, the round can be counted.

With the final ruling, the Carson-Newman women's golf team took first place in the event after shooting a second-day score of 307 on Tuesday at the Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point. The victory was C-N's second in a week after it won the Maryville College Invitational last Saturday.

Lady Eagle senior Sarah Jane Sinard (Jefferson City, Tenn.) captured medalist honors for a second-straight tournament after shooting a two-over 74 in the final round for a two-day total of 145.

The Lady Eagles finished the tournament with a score of 622, which was three strokes ahead of Catawba (625) and seven strokes ahead of California University (Pa.) (629).

C-N freshman Melanie Manis (Louisville, Tenn.) tied for 10th place as she carded a 76 on Tuesday for a two-round total of 155. Junior Jessica Tarbet (Corryton, Tenn.) also placed in the top 20 with a two-day total of 160.

C-N returns to action on Sept. 20-22 in the Queens University Invitational at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. The Lady Eagles will go through a practice round on Sept. 20 before playing the first round on Sept. 21.
