Eagles earn second place finish at Battle at Hilton Head

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C.- Despite three golfers finishing inside the top ten, Carson-Newman came up just short in its quest for a three-peat at the 2023 Battle at Hilton Head, finishing in second place.

Carson-Newman maintained its second-place position it had heading into the final round by putting together a team score of 301, totaling 599 strokes for the event. C-N finished seven strokes back of Wingate who finished the weekend with a 592-team score. Wingate put together an even par 288 final round to secure the victory.

Ellie Haughton (Lincolnshire, England) was spectacular in the two rounds, finishing as C-N' best score in the final round at even par. The senior made three birdies in a four-hole stretch (5-8) to finish the front nine 2-under par. Three bogeys and one birdie on the back nine led to a 1-under finish in the final round. Haughton finished the two-day event 2-over par in a tie for 3rd place. The third-place finish ties for the highest in her career and its fifth time she's finished inside the top five at an event.

In her first collegiate tournament, freshman Ida Peterson (Copenhagen, Denmark) secured a top ten finish. She got off to a great start, finishing the front nine at 1-under par. The freshman made four bogeys and five pars to finish the round at 3-over par. She finished the tournament at 5-over par for the two days, good for a tie for 7th place.

Caroline Nemes (Orlando, FL)  put together another fine round of golf, a 3-over 75. The round included birdies on the par 5 4th and 10th holes and par 3 5th. . Her 10th place finish is the highest of her career. She finished inside the top 10 for the first time at C-N, and inside the top 20 for just the second time.

Hannah Holland's (Sale Creek, Tenn.) final round was plagued by a quadruple bogey on the par 4 11th. She made twelve pars en route to a 9-over 81. She finished the tournament tied for the best scoring average on the par 3s, going 1-under. Holland finished tied for 23rd.

Maeve Cummins (Waringstown, Northern Ireland) recorded a pair of birdies in her final round carding a 7-over 79. The graduate student finished the tournament at 13-over par, finishing inside the top 30.

Alice Thomas (Mid Glamorgan, Wales) finished the tournament by shaving seven strokes off her first-round score to finish in.   place. The junior made pars on nine of her first ten holes. Her lone birdie of the tournament came in the final round on the 344-yard par four 16th.

Carson-Newman recorded the best scoring average on the par 3s this week, going 4-over as a team, three shots better than second. The Eagles finished top three in scoring average on par 4s and 5s, and in pars and birdies made for the tournament.

The Eagles return to action on Monday Feb. 27 for the Low Tide event held at Dunes West Golf Club in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.
