C-N drops SAC opener against Anderson

Box Score

ANDERSON, S.C. – Despite a good start, Carson Newman (1-2-2) (0-1) fell in its SAC opener to Anderson (4-1-1) (1-0) on Saturday evening 2-1.

"Disappointing result with our first game in conference despite going up 1-0 in the first half," Coach Simon Duffy said. "We concede two goals that are very preventable. We just can't seem to score at the moment, but we have the talent in the squad to do so. Limestone will be a very good test for us, so we have to get ourselves ready for our next conference game on Wednesday."

Carson-Newman got the scoring started in the 15th minute, as pair of freshmen made an early impact. Selina Jud found Maja Bengtsson who was able to shoot the ball past Jeanette Campbell to give the Eagles the early 1-0 advantage. The goal was the one scored in a first half for the Eagles this season.

Anderson answered late in the first half. Emma Deadwyler found Spencer Heming who scored the equalizer in the 42ndminute.

C-N goalkeeper Laura Germes was tested early in the second half, as she came up with two saves in the first five minutes of the half to help keep the game scoreless.

Anderson's Deadwyler would take advantage of another good opportunity, as she would send a shot in the bottom right corner of goal to put the Trojans ahead 2-1 in the 59th minute.

C-N's offense would start to pick up the intensity in the 70th minute, as the Eagles fired four shots in a two-minute span but were all saved by Campbell.

The Eagles had another great opportunity in the 83rd minute but Sydnee Duncan's shot was once again saved by Campbell. Duncan had another excellent opportunity four minutes later, but her shot went wide from the top of the box.

C-N outshot Anderson 20-10, with 10 of those shots going on goal. Sanne Martinsen and Duncan each had a team-high four shots. 10 different Eagles recorded a shot in the match. C-N had five corner kicks to the Trojans three.

The win for the Trojans snaps a seven-game losing streak against the Eagles. The loss for C-N ends a seven-game win streak in road openers in SAC play as well.

C-N returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to take on Limestone for a 6:00 p.m. kick.
