Eagles offense dominant in seventh straight win

Box Score

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – Carson-Newman women's soccer (8-2-2) used a strong offensive performance to run past Bluefield State (3-6-2) winning 5-0 on Wednesday evening.

"Happy that the girls were able to keep it going for our seventh win in a row," Carson-Newman head coach Simon Duffy said. "Especially after having to step out of conference play and still be able to score some goals. We need to recover now and get ready for a tough fixture on Saturday."

The Eagles improved to 3-1 in road matches this season. It's the sixth straight game that the Eagles have scored multiple goals. During this seven-game winning streak, the Eagles have outscored their opponents 23-3.

C-N threatened in the 7th minute off a free kick. Junior Abbie Zander sent a ball into the box that was headed off the right post and out of play.

The Eagles began the scoring in the 29th minute, as Zander dribbled up the right side and fired a shot that deflected to the back post, where senior Addie Henry was waiting. Henry sent an easy shot into the back of the net and C-N was up 1-0.

Just two minutes later, off a free kick, the ball was deflected in the box and senior Jente Kuper took advantage booting home a ball past goalkeeper Rylee Truslow to double the Eagles lead to 2-0.

Zander got the scoring started early in the second half. She made a quick run into the box and fired a home a shot for her first goal of the year to make it 3-0 Eagles. She becomes the thirteenth different C-N player to score a goal this season.

In the 53rd minute, Zander found sophomore Sydnee Duncan fired a shot on goal that the goalkeeper could not handle as it got past her and into the back of the net to put C-N up 4-0. The goal was Duncan's fourth of the year.

Ten minutes later, Zander once again was involved in C-N's attack as she sent a cross into the box where junior Carina Wust knocked it home to make it 5-0 Eagles. The goal was Wust's second this year.

Five different Eagles scored in the win. Zander recorded all three assists for C-N.

Goalkeepers Laura Germes and Jenna Rehm combined for the shutout, each playing a half in the match. Neither were forced to make a save. The duo combines for C-N's fifth shutout of the season.

The Eagles outshot Bluefield St 26-4 and 13-0 shots on goal. 14 of the 18 players that played for C-N recorded a shot in the match.

C-N heads into the final four-game stretch of the regular season as it sets its focus toward a road matchup with Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday evening at 5 p.m.
