MacGregor Leads Eagles with 2nd Place Finish, C-N Places 9th at Saint Leo Invitational

DADE CITY, Fla. – Carson-Newman men's golf held serve in the final round of the Saint Leo Invitational, finishing 9th following another stellar round from Elliot MacGregor.

"It was a great tournament for Elliot [MacGregor]," head coach Randy Wylie said. "As a team, we need to continue building depth and get that one higher round we have to count out of there… Then we could be a really competitive team."

MacGregor finished the event in 2nd after a 69-stroke third round, finishing the tournament at 8-under. MacGregor's opening nine holes featured seven-straight pars before matching a late bogey with a birdie to enter the back nine at even-par. The senior carded five birdies on the back nine and shot the rest at par to finish the day at 5-under.

Nick Daugherty tied for 47th, stroking a 74 in the final round to finish the event at 5-over. Daugherty's front nine featured three holes over par, but a birdie and five pars limited the damage to send him to the back nine at 4-over. Daugherty chopped two strokes off his total on the final stretch, carding three birdies and four pars to overcome a bogey and finish the round at 2-over.

Aidan Powter delivered a 76 in the final round, tying for 49th at 7-over. Powter added a stroke on the front nine, but limited the damage of a pair of bogeys with a birdie and six pars, entering the back nine at 1-over. On the back nine, Powter added a trio of strokes on two holes over par but shot seven pars to finish the round at 4-over.

Freshman Ian Schoonmaker shot a 79 in the third round, tying for 61st at 11-over. Schoomaker shot four bogeys on the front nine, but two birdies and three pars sent him to the back nine at 4-over. The freshman added three strokes on the back nine but limited the damage with six pars to finish the round at 7-over.

Freshman Owen Larson jumped four spots with a tournament-best 77, tying for 87th at 19-over. He shot two bogeys on the front nine but carded the other seven holes at par, entering the back nine at 2-over. The freshman carded four bogeys on the back nine, but a birdie and four pars helped him finish the round at 5-over.

The Eagles will take nearly a month off before heading to the Ralph Hargett Invitational in Monroe, North Carolina, on March 17th.
