MacGregor Tied for 4th, C-N in 9th After Day One of Saint Leo Invitational

DADE CITY, Fla. – Led by a top-five standing from Elliot MacGregor, the Carson-Newman men's golf team sits in 9th following the first day of the Saint Leo Invitational.

"It was a really nice day for Elliot," head coach Randy Wylie said. "His second round was spectacular."

MacGregor's opening round front nine featured a pair of bogeys, but three birdies and four pars sent him to the back nine at 1-under. MacGregor carded eight-straight pars to finish the round at even-par despite an early bogey on the back nine.

The senior jumped 18 spots in round two, stroking an impressive 67 in the day's final round. He started the front nine with seven-consecutive pars before matching a bogey with a birdie to enter the day's final stretch at even-par. MacGregor shined on the back nine, stroking three consecutive birdies. He added two more birdies and four pars to finish the round at 5-under, solidifying his position in the top five following the first day of action.

Nick Daugherty and Aidan Powter sit tied for 47th at 3-over following the first two rounds of the spring.

Daugherty started the day strong, stroking three birdies and six pars on the first nine holes, entering the back nine at 3-under. The senior matched a pair of bogeys with two birdies and added five pars to end the round at 3-under.

The Andersonville native carded a 78 in round two. Four of his first six holes were over par, but the final three holes of the front nine featured a birdie and two pars to enter the back nine at 4-over. On the back nine, Daugherty limited the damage of three bogeys with a birdie and five pars to finish the round at 6-over.

Powter's opening front nine featured three bogeys, but two birdies and four pars sent him to the back nine at 1-over. Despite a double bogey on the back nine, Powter carded the other eight holes at par to finish the round at 3-over.

In round two, Powter stroked bogeys on the front and back end of the front nine but carded a birdie and six pars between to enter the final stretch at 1-over. He stroked a birdie and eight pars on the back nine, finishing the day's final round at even-par.

Freshman Ian Schoonmaker had a solid debut, notching a 75 in round one and a 73 in round two.

"I am really proud of Ian," Wylie said. "He did a nice job in his first action as a freshman."

Schoonmaker was consistent on the front nine in round one, carding eight pars and a birdie to enter the back nine at 1-under. The freshman added four strokes on the back nine, but limited the damage with a birdie and four pars to finish the round at 3-over.

In round two, Schoonmaker carded three bogeys on the front nine, but two birdies and four pars sent him to the final stretch at 1-over. The freshman shot all nine holes at par on the back nine, finishing the round at 1-over.

Freshman Owen Larson finished the day tied for 91st at 14-over. Despite a triple bogey on hole one, Larson birdied on the next hole and carded six of the final seven holes at par to enter the back nine at 3-over. Larson shot three holes over par on the back nine, but six pars helped limit the damage to finish the round at 7-over.

It was a similar second round for Larson, carding three holes over par on the front nine but six holes at par sent him to the back nine at a manageable 4-over. Three holes over par on the back nine added a handful of strokes on three holes over par, a birdie and four pars helped replicate the 7-over total from round one.

The Eagles are tied with No. 22 Nova Southeastern, and four strokes behind Tampa heading into the final round on Tuesday.
