NEWBERRY, S.C. –Thaylan Silva (São Paulo, Brazil) tallied a brace for a second consecutive match, including a program record-breaking penalty kick, to propel Carson-Newman to a 3-1 victory over Newberry on Saturday afternoon at the Smith Road Complex.

"Another good result on the road today that I thought we deserved," Carson-Newman coach Stephen Lyons said. "We created a number of good chances and need to be a little more clinical, but, again, overall a very good display. Bram [Kaarsgaren] had a great assist for Thay and we have been working on set pieces, so it was nice to score after picking up second ball from a corner. Also great to have multiple players get minutes under their belt."

The senior lined up for his third PK of the season in the 52nd minute, converting to move him to a perfect 6-6 showing in his time with the Eagles. The goal moves him to the top spot on the program's career penalty kicks attempted and made lists. In a season, he is now tied for first with three PKs made in this campaign while sitting tied for fourth on three attempts.

Silva stands as the only Carson-Newman (9-3, 7-1) player to have net multiple goals in a match this season, something he has done three times now on the year. He leads the team with nine goals, netting a hat trick in the win over Erskine on September 8 and four combined in the past two matches alone.

This marks the fourth consecutive road victory for Carson-Newman, extending its South Atlantic Conference road unbeaten streak to 13 in a row. It also extends its staunch lead in the series with Newberry (2-11, 2-6) to 26-0-2 all-time, winning each of its last two meetings.

C-N has scored at least three goals in both of the last two matches, four times on the year. Each of those outings has resulted in victories. In Lyons' tenure, the Eagles have gone 26-0 when netting three or more goals.

The Eagles got on the board in the 32nd minute to open the scoring thanks to a low right goal from Silva with an assist from netminder Bram Kaarsgaren (Den Bosch, The Netherlands).

Five minutes later, a corner kick to give C-N possession provided Eric Schmutzer (Wöllersdorf, Austria) the chance to push the lead to 2-0 with a hand from Yannick Kranz (Hannover, Germany).

The net-mover is the first of Schmutzer's career.

C-N held the lead into the break, leading shots 9-4 with a 3-2 advantage in shots on frame.

Newberry got within one in the 48th minute after a look from Moses Bakabulindi connected, cutting the Eagle lead in half, 2-1. It was the first goal allowed by C-N in 250:02 of road action since a 3-1 win at Wingate on September 18 when the Bulldogs scored in the 74th minute.

A foul on Newberry's Harry McDonnell in the 18-yard box in the 52nd minute awarded C-N a penalty kick, giving it to trusty Silva. He sent his look to the bottom right corner, just evading the hands of Newberry keeper Lockie Maher.

"Thay has been outstanding so far this season and has been able to contribute with some big-time goals," Lyons said. "Some of his individual and link-up play is unbelievable. The way he leads on and off the field is an example for everyone on the team."

All-told, C-N outshot Newberry 23-7, 9-5 in looks on goal. The group has yet to see a road match this season where the opposition has made double-digit shot attempts.

Harry Whitehead (Oxford, England) led everyone with eight shots attempts, matching his career-high for shots in a single match. Silva landed all three of his shots on frame, also a leader for all players on the pitch.

Kaarsgaren moves to 8-3 on the year in net for the Eagles, putting him one-win shy of matching his season-high for victories set in 2019. He grabbed four saves with one goal allowed.

Both Bakabulindi and Noah Vezzu led Newberry with two shot attempts in the loss, each of those chances on frame.

Maher recorded the loss for the Wolves, bringing him to 0-3 this season. He made six saves on the day.

Carson-Newman takes a week away from action before coming back to the home pitch on October 23 for a senior day contest with Coker. That match will start at 2:30 p.m. at McCown Field.
