Lady Eagles welcome Lady Indians Saturday

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles basketball team (10-4, 4-3 South Atlantic Conference) will welcome in the Catawba Lady Indians (8-7, 4-3 South Atlantic Conference) to Holt Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.

Carson-Newman is coming off of a 63-51 victory over rival Lincoln Memorial last Wednesday, and the Lady Eagles have won three of their last four games in conference play.

"Catawba is a team that I think mirrors us a lot in their style of play," Carson-Newman head coach Mike Mincey said. "It's going to be a real challenge but it's a home game and a really good opportunity for us to try and get a 'W' if we can come ready to play."

Against LMU, the Lady Eagles were led in scoring by Courdne Miles (Burlington, N.C.) and Jai Jai McLaughlin with their 13 points, and the duo was joined in double figures by Tatum Burstrom (Maryville, Tenn.) who added 10 points on her 19th birthday as Carson-Newman improved to 6-0 at home in the 2012-13 season.

Carson-Newman junior forward Shyra Clark (Cleveland, Tenn.) continues to lead the Lady Eagles in scoring and rebounding by averaging 11.5 points and 6.3 rebounds per contest. She also leads Carson-Newman by averaging 12.9 points per game against SAC competition.

Carson-Newman holds a 32-21 lead in the series against Catawba in a total of 53 meetings. The schools split last year's season series, with Carson-Newman winning 79-71 at Holt Fieldhouse on Nov. 30, 2011 while Catawba won in Salisbury, N.C. 53-43 on Jan. 28.

The schools have split the last four meetings, with each team winning on its home floor. The last time Catawba earned a win at Holt Fieldhouse was during the 2009-10 season as the Lady Indians won 75-66 in overtime.

This year's version of the Lady Indians, coached by Angie Morton, are tied with Carson-Newman in the SAC standings for fourth place with a 4-3 record in SAC play. Catawba was picked in the preseason SAC coaches poll to finish fifth, with sophomore Chole Bully picked to the preseason All-SAC first team.

Bully leads the Lady Indians in scoring by averaging 15.5 points per game, and Catawba also averages double digits points by Elizabeth Merritt (13.4) and Antionette McPhail (12.1). Catawba has lost two of its last three games, while picking up a 69-62 win over Mars Hill on Wednesday.

"They are a dribble-drive type of offense," said Mincey. "They'll also sprinkle in a few quick hitters and they also mirror us in the way they change up defenses."

Coverage of the game is available on the Coca-Cola Eagle Sports Network, beginning with the Farm Bureau Countdown to Tipoff at 1:45 p.m. and the broadcast is also available on www.cneagles.com.
