Clark and Miles power Lady Eagles past Tornados 71-53

BREVARD, N.C. - The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles basketball team (11-5, 5-4 South Atlantic Conference) picked up a 71-53 victory over the Brevard Tornados (4-13, 2-7 South Atlantic Conference) at Boshamer Gymnasium on Wednesday evening.

Junior Shyra Clark (Cleveland, Tenn.) scored a career-high 21 points and collected her third double-double of the season with 14 rebounds. Also with a double-double for the Lady Eagles was senior Courdne Miles (Burlington, N.C.) with her season-high 14 points and 10 rebounds, and she has now scored double-digit points in four of Carson-Newman's last five games.

"I was happy with how we responded after the loss to Catawba on Saturday," said Carson-Newman head coach Mike Mincey. "To come over to Brevard and get a win, any road win in the conference is huge."

Along with Clark and Miles in double figures was freshman Tatum Burstrom (Maryville, Tenn.) with her 12 points, 10 of those coming in the first half.

Carson-Newman never trailed in the game, and after the game was tied at two in the first minute, the Lady Eagles would go on an 8-3 run and never looked back. The Lady Eagles shot 41 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes, and led at the half 39-27. Burstrom and Clark led all Carson-Newman first half scorers with 10 points apiece in the first half.

"I think the team was just together tonight," said Clark. "A lot of the seniors got us up to stay together and play hard."

Brevard started the second half strong with a three-pointer by Tempestt Mack to cut Carson-Newman's lead to seven at 39-32. That's as close as Brevard would get in the second half, with the Lady Eagles never allowing the lead to go under nine points for the rest of the game.

Carson-Newman finished the game on a 9-0 run to win by 18 points, matching largest margin of victory for the Lady Eagles in a SAC game this season along with a 57-39 win over Newberry on Jan. 12. The Lady Eagles finished the game shooting 41.5 percent from the field, and Carson-Newman won the rebounding battle 47-31. Carson-Newman is now 6-3 this season when out-rebounding an opponent.

Brevard was led in scoring by the 16 points of Micheala Watkins. Tuccoa Brackett joined her in double figures with a 14-point, seven-rebound performance.

Carson-Newman will next play on Saturday Feb. 2 on the road against the Wingate Bulldogs at 2 p.m. Coverage of the game is available on the Coca-Cola Eagle Sports Network, beginning with the Farm Bureau Countdown to Tipoff at 1:45 p.m. and the broadcast is also available on www.cneagles.com.
